After 16 seasons, TDMS will come to an end on Saturday, June 29th. For the last 10 weeks of the show,
Drew will share his TOP 10 moments of hosting Canada’s most listened to spiritual talk show.

Moment # 1:
“As we reach our final show I’m realizing that I’ll really miss three main things:
1/ Hearing from listeners about how much they appreciated a show that gave them permission to NOT be so certain about their spiritual journey.
2/ The privilege to speak to guests about whatever it is they believe, in a very light-hearted manner and with absolutely zero agenda, aside from a genuine personal curiosity to understand “belief”.
3/ Hanging out every Saturday with my pal from summer camp - Tim The Tool!”

  • The Good Brothers — The First Band Drew Ever Saw Live!
In 1970 twin brothers Bruce and Brian Good of Richmond Hill, Ontario, met James Ackroyd from Winnipeg, Manitoba and formed a band simply called James and The Good Brothers. Their first show was with Grand Funk Railroad at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto. Then came the cross Canada tour on the outrageous Festival Express with such artists as The Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, Ian & Sylvia, Ten Years After, Traffic and The Band just to name a few. With a little help from friends The Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane, they recorded their first album on Columbia records. From nights at the renowned Troubadour in West Hollywood to the gigs at San Francisco's famed Fillmore West and Winterland Ballroom with The Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Quicksilver Messenger Service, and the New Riders of The Purple Sage - they were loving it! Later, James would choose to remain in the U.S. while the brothers returned home to Canada and recruited younger brother Larry. This was 1973 and would be the beginning of a wonderful musical trip... The Good Brothers. Their first gig was the legendary Toronto club The Riverboat, on May 14, 1974. They played simple, straight from the soul music that encompassed country, bluegrass, folk, Celtic and the occasional taste from their rock & roll songbook. Highlighted by Larry's fiery banjo breaks, Bruce's award-winning autoharp styles, Brian’s guitar finger picking and their unique sibling harmonies, they produced enough energy to burn down the barn. It wasn't long before The Good Brothers were packing Toronto's fabled El Mocambo five nights a week; breaking bar records, attendance records, and exhausting determined dancers. Then there were eight straight Juno awards for Best Country Group, and headline gigs at Toronto’s Massey Hall and Roy Thompson Hall, The National Art Centre in Ottawa and the weeks at L.A.'s Universal Amphitheatre with their mentor Gordon Lightfoot. There was even a certified gold self-titled double album. In 2004 they were honoured by being inducted into the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame as well as two nominations for Country Group and Roots Artist of the year at the Canadian Country Music Awards. In 2015 they received a “Lifetime Achievement Award” from the Toronto Musicians Association and in 2016 were inducted into the North American Country Music Association International Hall of Fame in Tennessee.

Moment # 2:
(CAUTION: Major Name Dropping Ahead) “Let’s be honest. It’s been such a cool thing becoming pals with so many of my guests over the years and hanging out a little in their scene. I know I’m supposed to play it cool about this stuff but since I’ve never actually been cool… From staying at Kathie Lee Gifford’s holiday house on Nantucket Island to partying at Candace Cameron and Val Bure’s house in Malibu to evening drinks with Dyan Cannon at her place in Hollywood to chatting with James Brown in his suite after one of his final performances to grabbing lunch with John Ratzenberger in the Hollywood Hills to dinner at LA’s exclusive Soho House with celebrity attorney Ken Hertz and Hollywood producer Bryn Freedman to waving at the neighbor (Harrison Ford) while showering at a friend’s house in Brentwood California to schmoozing at a TED Conference rooftop pool party with Goldie Hawn to almost getting kicked out of a Fuller House taping at Warner Brothers Studios for laughing at inappropriate times with soap opera actress Tracy Melchior… it really has been a wild ride. But these days I’m honestly just as pumped about giving my grandkids a ride on the lawn tractor at the farm. Contentment is a beautiful thing!”

  • Gary Burghoff — “Radar” from M*A*S*H
In 1967, Gary Burghoff had his biggest break in acting when he was cast as Charlie Brown in the original Off-Broadway production of You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown. The play won the Outer Circles Critics Award. Over the course of three years (one year in New York City and two years in Los Angeles), he performed the part over 1,000 times. Robert Altman was so impressed with Gary in You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown in Los Angeles that he gave him a screen test. That screen test led to Gary's part as Radar in the movie M*A*S*H. Gary was the only actor in Twentieth Century Fox's hit film M*A*S*H who was asked to reprise his character for the extremely successful television series. Gary received Emmy nominations for seven of his eight years on M*A*S*H. In 1977, he won the Emmy for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. Unfortunately, it was the one year he didn't attend the awards ceremony… he was fishing. The presenter was M*A*S*H star Alan Alda, who said he was glad Burghoff could not appear because "it gives me an opportunity to tell the world what a wonderful, gifted and outstanding person Gary Burghoff is -- something he, of course, would not say about himself." McLean Stevenson once said Gary "was the best actor" on M*A*S*H. Stevenson, who played Col. Henry Blake on the show, was Burghoff's closest friend on the set. Burghoff left M*A*S*H shortly after the start of its eighth season. He wanted to spend more time with his family and in an interview in The Complete Book of M*A*S*H, he discusses how he suffered from burnout. The strict scheduling required while in the series was difficult. After the third season, Gary was in fewer episodes each season due to the effect it was having on his family life. He also felt he had learned all he could from being in the series and didn't want to stay just for the money. After leaving M*A*S*H, he created his own All-Star Dixieland Jazz Band which recorded an album and toured some of the nation's jazz clubs. In regional theater, he toured five theaters doing The Owl and the Pussycat; it broke four of the theaters' attendance records. Next, he did Woody Allen's Play It Again, Sam, breaking more house records

  • John Ratzenberger — Star Of All 25 Pixar Movies, Cliff Claven from Cheers
During more than three decades of moviemaking and theater, John Ratzenberger has enjoyed success as a screenwriter, director, producer and multi Emmy-nominated actor. He is also an accomplished entrepreneur and philanthropist. In 1982, John accepted a writing assignment for CBS in Los Angeles. On the day he was scheduled to return to London, he auditioned for a role on the upcoming Cheers. At the time of his audition, the character of the postman did not exist. As he walked out of the room, he turned and asked the creators “Do you have a bar know-it-all?” They didn’t know what that was, so John gave them five minutes of improv, demonstrating exactly what it meant with the perfect Boston accent. They loved what they saw and Cliff Clavin was born. In the history of television, only a handful of series have achieved the worldwide success of Cheers, on which John portrayed Cliff for the show’s entire 11-year run. To this day, thanks to daily syndication, Cliff continues as one of America’s most beloved characters. John is better known to a younger generation as the only actor to voice a character in every Pixar film including the witty Hamm the piggy bank in every Toy Story; P.T. Flea, the circus ringmaster in Bug’s Life; the lovable snow monster Yeti in Monsters, Inc. and Monsters University; the ever-changing school of Moonfish in Finding Nemo; the philosophical character The Underminer in The Incredibles and The Incredibles 2; a Mac-truck in Cars, Cars 2 and Cars 3; Mustafa, the head waiter in Ratatouille; as John, a human in WALL-E; the construction worker in Up!; Gordon the guard in Brave; Harland in Planes; Fritz in Inside Out; Earl in The Good Dinosaur; Bill the Crab in Finding Dory; and Juan Ortodoncia in Coco. Pixar artists always find a way to include John’s recognizable eyebrows and mustache. Pixar’s creators call John their “good luck charm.” In all, John has acted in 38 major motion pictures including blockbusters such as Superman, Star Wars: Episode V –The Empire Strikes Back and Ghandi to independent films like his hit The Woodcarver. He has written, directed or produced hundreds of television projects over the span of his career making him the 6th largest grossing actor of all time based on box-office receipts. Since climbing off the barstool at Cheers over a decade ago, John has immersed himself in what makes America great, a country in which a truck driver’s son wound up being a TV icon. He wrote the book: We’ve Got it Made in America, A Common Man’s Salute to an Uncommon Country, a collection of essays from his five years on the road visiting factory towns throughout the country on the Travel Channel show “John Ratzenberger’s Made in America.”

  • Amy Savin
Years ago, Drew ran a contest on the show called, “So You Think God Wants You To Sing”. Amateur singers submitted their audition videos of them performing a song, then finalists were culled from the pack. Eventually, a winner was chosen and Amy Savin was the winner! Now, Amy is a professional recording artist and her new album ‘Unveiled’ was just released. *Amy Savin is a dynamic and powerful vocalist and songwriter who crafts melodic, alternative-rock songs that weld huge sounding guitars and intricately designed drum parts together into explosive declarations. You can hear influences like Paramore and Amanda Cook in new songs like “It’s A Good Life” and “All Will See” while her first record is more of a Bethany Dillon-esque roots rock-driven effort. Though she lives in the US, Amy shares dual-citizenship with both Canada and Australia. She will be touring in the US and Internationally in support of her full-length record in 2019.

  • THE FINAL USELESS TV TRIVIA
The first time Drew opened up the phone lines 16 years ago to chat with the listeners, it was to do USELESS TV TRIVIA. Back then, instead of playing the actual theme songs, he just hummed them and listeners called in to guess which show it was from. These days Drew & Tim The Tool actually play the real theme song and it’s still one of our listener’s favorite segments. For the last USELESS TV TRIVIA, Drew’s Roasters (all of them self proclaimed TV Nerds) will compete to win absolutely NOTHING!

Drew will share his TOP 10 moments of hosting Canada’s most listened to spiritual talk show.

Moment # 3:
“We ran a game show called Soul SURVIVOR (based on the TV show) where various religions ‘competed for the soul’ of one person who hadn’t yet bought into any particular religious belief. The ‘contestant’ decided to show up for one show, wreaking of alcohol. We didn’t really notice how bad things were until he began slurring his words and saying some incredibly bizarre stuff on air. I decided to end the interview and send him on his way. Next thing I know, Tim and one of our interns were calling 911 because the guy had passed out in the hallway. We replaced him the following week with the runner-up contestant. It’s okay though. He SURVIVED!”

  • Neale Donald Walsch — Bestselling Author of CONVERSATIONS WITH GOD, Author of THE ESSENTIAL PATH: Making the Daring Decision to Be Who You Truly Are
Our modern era is plagued by increasing alienation―we are seeing an “us against them” world. Everywhere we turn, we find ourselves divided from each other as never before across political, economic, social, and spiritual lines. As humanity is being torn apart right before our eyes - separating many of us from our friends and even our loved ones, from our hopes and dreams, from the natural world, and from so much that gives meaning and value to our lives - people are blaming everyone and everything around them for the collective problems that we have created ourselves. We are turning against each other, rather than to each other, just when we need each other the most. Bestselling author of Conversations with God Neale Donald Walsch offers a radical solution to the growing problem of humanity’s alienation. He invites us to question our basic assumptions about ourselves, about each other, about life and how it works, and about God, and to rethink the very definition of humanity. The Essential Path challenges every human to make a Daring Decision―to look at who we are and how we can choose to be, in a planet-altering new way. With insight and spiritual perceptivity, Walsch peers into the heart of a broken, divided society, prompting us to ask the critical questions that have the power to transform our world.

  • Gayle Scott — Enneagram Guru
The Enneagram played a huge part in the restoration of Drew & Bev’s marriage. Only after learning about themselves and then each other (from the perspective of The Enneagram) were they able to do two things.
    1/ Practice compassionate, non-judgmental self-awareness.
2/ Not take unmet needs in their marriage so personally.
To help explain the Enneagram and clarify the practical benefit within a marriage, is Drew’s friend and world recognized Enneagram guru, Gayle Scott - Director of The Enneagram Mystery School of Colorado and International Enneagram Association Authorized Teacher & Professional.

  • Ashley David Chapman — Vice President of Chapman’s Ice Cream
Back in 1973, David and Penny Chapman bought a small creamery in Markdale Ontario. The Chapman family began with four employees and two trucks and moved into the cramped and primitive rooms above an old creamery in town. In 2001, Chapman's opened a distribution center in New Brunswick to better serve its customers in Atlantic Canada. Although Chapman's Ice Cream has grown substantially, it is still firmly rooted in the community and deeply loyal to its employees. The distribution centre in Ontario covers about 140,000 square feet and can house over 6 million units of product, which gets delivered right across Canada on over 50 trucks. At 10 am on September 4th, 2009, someone noticed smoke coming out of one of the buildings. By mid-afternoon, the fire was almost under control when the Municipality of Grey Highlands undersized water tower ran dry. At 5 pm the Chapman family withdrew to their family home outside of Markdale, after witnessing 36 years of hard work go up in smoke, but within an hour of getting home, the family made the quick decision to rebuild their business. Worried about the local economy, and their 350 employees who make up the extended Chapman family, the Chapman's refused to go down without a fight! Shortly after this, the entire management team gathered around David and Penny's dining room table and started planning the rebuild. Within 7 weeks from the fire, Chapman’s produced their first 2Litre brick of ice cream! In the ensuing months, the community and Chapman's worked tirelessly to build their new manufacturing facility, appropriately named Phoenix. Within a year and a half from the fire, they had rebuilt bigger and better than ever! Today, Chapman's is Canada's largest independent ice cream company.

Moment # 4:
“Tim The Tool and I were walking to our cars in the underground parking lot, when suddenly a man came out of nowhere and angrily confronted me. Apparently, his wife had called into the show and shared that her husband was physically abusive and wanted to know if God would be upset with her if she left him. I encouraged her to LEAVE. She did. He was furious with me. So I let him empty out all his rage on me. (verbally) When it was all said and done, we hugged. Yup - that happened.”

TDMS SPECIAL
A Folk Singer, An Ex-Jihadist, An Imam, A Rabbi &
An Ex-Pastor Walk Into A Radio Show

Todays’ show has a theme. American singer/songwriter David Wilcox has written many soul penetrating songs. One of them is the opening for our 9 week series - REBUILDING LOVE. (“Start with The Ending”) But one of his songs is the premise for today’s theme. “Three Brothers” is the story of three brothers who each feel that they are the brother that deserves to inherit all of their Father’s estate. As the will is read, they discover that each of their wishes came true. Each brother DID inherit all of their father’s estate. Now, although that math doesn’t make sense, the song is an illustration of the world’s largest monotheistic religions - Islam, Judaism & Christianity - that happened to all come from the same piece of land that has been fought over for centuries... Jerusalem. But the most powerful narrative in the song is the impact all of this fighting between the brothers has on their sister - Faith.

Special Guests

  • David Wilcox — Recording Artist
Cleveland-born David Wilcox is now 20 records into a career marked by personal revelation and wildly loyal fans. His lyrical insight is matched by a smooth baritone voice, virtuosic guitar chops, and creative open tunings, giving him a range and tenderness rare in folk music. Wilcox released an independent album in 1987, was a winner of the prestigious Kerrville Folk Festival New Folk award in 1988, and by 1989 he had signed with A&M Records. His first release on the label, How Did You Find Me Here, sold over 100,000 copies the first year largely by word of mouth. His latest record The View From the Edge (2018) is a collection of powerful new songs, many of which he has been performing at live shows for the past several years. It’s an album that reflects four years of thinking, writing, crafting, playing and life. In recognition of this new release, David Wilcox was named the Grand Prize Winner of the 2018 USA Songwriting Contest. Considered a 'songwriter's songwriter', his skills as a performer and storyteller are unmatched. He holds audiences rapt with nothing more than a single guitar, thoroughly written songs, a fearless ability to mine the depths of human emotions of joy, sorrow and everything in between, and all tempered by a quick and wry wit. In live performance, David loves making up a spontaneous song for an audience member in need. Anyone who has seen Wilcox perform more than once or twice has seen him concoct one of his “Musical Medicine” songs on the spot, full of lyrical artistry and musical inventiveness, like some kind of uncanny parlor trick. David Wilcox finds inspiration wherever he looks. The songs, in turn, provide inspiration to longtime listeners as well as those finding him for the first time. It’s in the song and the craftsmanship; it’s medicine for the soul; it’s story; it’s a restless spirituality.

“David Wilcox’s ongoing musical journey is compelling and richly deserving of a listen.” -Rolling Stone

The first single from that album, ‘Come Right Back To You’ debuted on the iTunes Canada Top 200 RnB/Soul song chart at #23, while the album itself debuted at #11 on the Canadian iTunes Top 200 RnB/Soul chart. Stylistically, that album incorporated some fresh new elements, as Avery explains, “Being influenced by such Jazz greats as Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, Chet Baker, and Carmen McRae, my second CD tried to highlight my jazz vocal style, while creating a contemporary Soul sound, reminiscent of artists such as Norah Jones, Corrine Bailey Rae and even Amy Winehouse. Journey

  • JOURNEY Update - Marcella’s Mom!
Just before a show in March 2015, Drew was told that a former guest / turned friend had just died. MS finally took Marcella Immacolata Trichilo. She was only 38. Since she was first interviewed by Drew in 2006, especially during his years of “public doubt”, Marcella was a pebble under his soul. Over time, her body slowly trapped and betrayed her. Drew was in complete awe of her unwavering dedication to the God who never answered her hope & prayers to be healed. Drew was honoured to have been asked by the family to lead the funeral service for this young, vibrant, stubborn and cheeky Italian woman. Marcella was tenacious grace! Moment # 6:
THIS ONE TIME - ON TDMS… “During a commercial break, I went to the men’s room. On the way back, a person walked out of the lunchroom and asked if I was Drew Marshall. I had no clue who they were. They told me they were here for the interview. I had no clue who they were. I expressed how happy I was to have them on the show and invited them into the studio. I had no clue who they were. As soon as we went to air, I asked the person to introduce themself. Then I remembered who they were. (As it turned out, they hadn’t actually confirmed their spot on the show that week, but we made it work.)”

  • Tommy Caldwell — Author of THE PUSH: A Climber’s Search For The Path, Star of Documentary THE DAWN WALL
THE PUSH is a dramatic, inspiring memoir by legendary rock climber Tommy Caldwell, the first person to free climb the Dawn Wall of Yosemite’s El Capitan. On January 14, 2015, Tommy Caldwell, along with his partner, Kevin Jorgeson, summited what is widely regarded as the hardest climb in history—Yosemite’s nearly vertical 3,000-foot Dawn Wall, after nineteen days on the route. Caldwell’s odds-defying feat was the culmination of an entire lifetime of pushing himself to his limits as an athlete. This engrossing memoir chronicles the journey of a boy with a fanatical mountain-guide father who was determined to instill toughness in his son to a teen whose obsessive nature drove him to the top of the sport-climbing circuit. Caldwell’s affinity for adventure then led him to the vertigo-inducing and little understood world of big wall free climbing. But his evolution as a climber was not without challenges; in his early twenties, he was held hostage by militants in a harrowing ordeal in the mountains of Kyrgyzstan. Soon after, he lost his left index finger in an accident. Later his wife, and main climbing partner left him. Caldwell emerged from these hardships with a renewed sense of purpose and determination. He set his sights on free climbing El Capitan’s biggest, steepest, blankest face—the Dawn Wall. This epic assault took more than seven years, during which time Caldwell redefined the sport, found love again, and became a father. The Push is an arresting story of focus, drive, motivation, endurance, and transformation, a book that will appeal to anyone seeking to overcome fear and doubt, cultivate perseverance, turn failure into growth, and find connection with family and with the natural world.

  • Rachel M. McCleary and Robert J. Barro — Authors of THE WEALTH OF RELIGIONS: The Political Economy of Believing and Belonging
Which countries grow faster economically—those with strong beliefs in heaven and hell or those with weak beliefs in them? Does religious participation matter? Why do some countries experience secularization while others are religiously vibrant? In The Wealth of Religions, Rachel McCleary and Robert Barro draw on their long record of pioneering research to examine these and many other aspects of the economics of religion. Places with firm beliefs in heaven and hell measured relative to the time spent in religious activities tend to be more productive and experience faster growth. Going further, there are two directions of causation: religiosity influences economic performance and economic development affects religiosity. Dimensions of economic development—such as urbanization, education, health, and fertility—matter too, interacting differently with religiosity. State regulation and subsidization of religion also play a role. The Wealth of Religions addresses the effects of religious beliefs on character traits such as work ethic, thrift, and honesty; the Protestant Reformation and its long-term effects on education and religious competition; Communism’s suppression of and competition with religion; the effects of Islamic laws and regulations on the functioning of markets and, hence, on the long-term development of Muslim countries; why some countries have state religions; analogies between religious groups and terrorist organizations; the violent origins of the Dalai Lama’s brand of Tibetan Buddhism; and the use by the Catholic Church of saint-making as a way to compete against the rise of Protestant Evangelicals.

*Rachel M. McCleary is a lecturer in the Department of Economics at Harvard University. Her books include The Oxford Handbook of the Economics of Religion.

*Robert J. Barro is the Paul M. Warburg Professor of Economics at Harvard. His books include Education Matters: Global Schooling Gains from the 19th to the 21st Century and Economic Growth. They both live in Massachusetts.

Since ASN’s inception, Melissa has been in contact with over 210 survivors. She is the author of You Carried Me, A Daughter's Memoir, which was released in January of 2017. After years of searching for her biological family and offering them forgiveness for the decision that was made to end her life, Melissa’s story, and her life, is so much more than one of survival.

When Claire met her biological mother in March of 2009, she was told her life was a miracle. Claire's biological mom became pregnant at the age of 13. Her biological grandmother took her birth mother to an abortion clinic where she had a D and E procedure performed on her. Weeks later she realized she was still pregnant. After consulting with the abortionist who performed the first abortion, she was informed she had been pregnant with twins... only one of the twins had been aborted, the second baby had been undetected. Referred to an out-of-state late-term abortion clinic to do a second abortion, Claire's birthmother was told abortion would not be an option. Claire was born at 30 weeks gestation, weighing 3 lbs. 2 oz. She was adopted shortly after birth by an amazing family, whom she dearly loves.

But what would it take for one young man to not only to rise above those statistics but also become a Navy SEAL, actor, entrepreneur, writer, and successful husband and father? And to go a step further, how could a person who barely graduated high school, couldn’t swim, act or lead find great success in areas that require such skills? Having gone through times of intense struggle, racism, pressure, and failure, Adeleke answers those questions in his inspiring story of overcoming the odds, even when it didn’t make sense, and ultimately experiencing true personal transformation. *Remi Adeleke was born in Western Africa, but following the death of his father, he, his mother, and brother relocated permanently to the Bronx, New York. Moment # 9:

  • Ryan St. Pierre
Ryan St. Pierre was working in the trades and waiting tables in the evenings at a local restaurant. On weekends he was working as a fashion and print add model in Toronto, ON. In the early summer of 2001, Ryan received a call from his modelling agency that would surely and definitely change his future in unimaginable ways. They asked if he was musical in any way. Ryan immediately admitted that he was a singer/songwriter and could play several instruments (with a preference to the guitar). His agency was excited in expressing that they had a really unique audition opportunity for him that weekend in the big city. Ryan went to the audition not knowing what to expect but confidently brought and delivered an original song for the unknown hosts to hear and assess. “There were so many people auditioning for this mysterious musical opportunity, I truly didn’t think that I would receive a call back”. A few days later the phone rang again. Ryan’s agency told him that the label executives at the audition loved his original music and were calling him back for a second audition. At this time, Ryan was informed of the opportunity that he was auditioning for. He learned that several celebrity actors and musicians (Joshua Morrow, Eddie Cibrian, Howie Dorough, and C.J. Huyer) were amalgamating their resources to form Canada’s newest and hottest “Boy Band”. Although this wasn’t the musical direction Ryan had in mind, he didn’t for a moment consider passing up such a lucrative opportunity. The second audition was a success, and Ryan was offered one of two lead spots to front the band. In the Fall of 2001 Ryan officially signed a recording and management deal with EMI/Sextant Records to lead the newly created Boy Band group “Drop4”. The band went on to produce several high rotation spinning singles and music videos. In 2003 after two years with the band, Ryan made a difficult but important decision to leave “Drop4” and pursue a different musical direction on his own terms, utilizing his creative ideas and songs. In 2006, two songs that Ryan wrote were nominated for “Rock Song Of The Year”, and “Inspirational Song Of The Year”, at the 27th Annual Covenant Awards. NOW - after a nearly ten-year hiatus, Ryan is back on the music scene debuting a new solo album “Back To You” and ready to make his mark once again.

Moment # 10:
“THIS ONE TIME - ON TDMS… Tim The Tool brought his guitar to sing a couple of songs. Tucker The Wonder Dawg was also in the studio. Only a few bars into Tim’s first song, Tucker started howling! Tim and I started howling with laughter and I’m not even sure Tim could finish the song. I think he just put his guitar back in its case!”

Prior to becoming a parent, Turner had no idea how often he would pray for his children or how prayer would so profoundly affect him. Now, as the parent of three young children, Turner says, “In many ways, praying is a bit like breathing: a consistent, conscious and subconscious longing of hope on behalf of my kids. Praying over them has been healing for me, redeeming, and it brings peace to my sometimes anxious heart. It’s my hope that this book will empower parents with good words to speak over their children.” When I Pray for You celebrates the dreams, hopes, and longings that parents pray over their children while sharing with little ones how much care and concern a loved one feels for them. Born into the cult that her grandfather had started, and surrounded by friends and family, Gloriavale seemed like paradise for Lilia Tarawa at first. Her mother, Miracle, had grown up in there too and Lilia’s father managed a thriving moss export business, one of several companies owned by the community. As Lilia grew older, however, she began to see and experience the darker side of the cult, with its strict rules, tight control, and shocking abuse. As Lilia and her family started to question Gloriavale’s beliefs and practices, Lilia was forced to make a desperate choice: stay with people she loved or flee to a world that she had always been told was evil. LIVE! on TDMS - Devoted Souly to the Art of Music

  • Darcy Windover
Ask any artist why they make music and chances are they’ll say that, at least in part, it’s a form of therapy. That was definitely true for Darcy Windover as he made his latest album whose title, Cope, pretty much says it all. For the Toronto - based singer/songwriter originally from Sarnia, Ontario, the new 10 - song collection is the summation of a difficult period revolving around his mother’s struggle with Alzheimer’s, and the mental toll it took on everyone close to her. That theme is encapsulated in the album’s opening track “How To Be Lonely,” which Windover specifically wanted to release to help fight the stigma surrounding anxiety and mental illness. Although, the song addresses tough issues, its anthemic, modern roots rock sound — the foundation for the album overall — is sure to inspire hope within anyone dealing with similar circumstances. Windover had previously entered the song in the 2017 edition of CBC’s Searchlight contest where it earned a more than respectable showing among the thousands of other entries. That momentum helped Windover complete Cope a year later with producer John Dinsmore (Kathleen Edwards, NQ Arbuckle) and his trusted band, including co-writer and duet partner Stacey Dowswell. Together, they built on the foundation of “How To Be Lonely” with songs that look at the causes and effects of mental illness from various perspectives. Some, like “This Is Gonna Hurt” and “Get By,” are powerful meditations on relationships in crisis, while others like “Simple Words” and “Where The Sound Don’t Go” explore the challenges of communicating effectively in our modern world. But what is perhaps most impressive about Cope is its immediate sonic appeal, particularly for anyone who appreciates classic roots-rock sounds. As a songwriter, Windover draws inspiration from his heroes such as Tom Petty, emphasizing melody, hooks, and atmosphere above all else, with a little twang for good measure. Sure, melancholy is unavoidable, but never as a distraction from pure songwriting Craftsmanship.
*Darcy and his band invite you to their CD release party for their new album, COPE at The Dakota Tavern in Toronto on April 18th 7-9 PM.

  • Frank Viola — Author of ReGRACE: What The Shocking Beliefs Of The Great Christians Can Teach Us
Everyone is tired of seeing Christians act ungraciously toward one another when they disagree. Social media has added to the carnage. Christians routinely block each other on Facebook because of doctrinal disagreements. The world watches the blood-letting, and the Christian message is tarnished. But what if every Christian discovered that their favorite teacher in church history had blind spots and held to some false–and even shocking–views? Bestselling author Frank Viola argues that this simple awareness will help Christians lighten up when they interact with each other in the face of theological disagreements.

In ReGrace, he uncovers some of the shocking beliefs held by faith giants like:

C.S. Lewis believed that the Bible contained errors, and that not all parts of it were the Word of God, and that the creation account in Genesis may have been derived from pagan sources.
Billy Graham said that people “who may not even know the name of Jesus but know in their hearts that they need something that they don’t have and they turn to the only light that they have, and I think that they are saved and that they’re going to be with us in heaven.”
Jonathan Edwards believed that being a slave owner was not incompatible with being a follower of Jesus.
Martin Luther held anti-Semitic views and believed Jewish people deserved persecution. • John Calvin believed in attacking his enemies with vicious name-calling, and that Old Testament capital offenses should be observed.
John Wesley believed in ghosts, paranormal phenomenon, and in being idea “electrified daily” by a static electricity machine for good health.
Charles Spurgeon held to political views that many evangelicals would find unbiblical.
D.L. Moody embraced the Christian evolutionist Henry Drummond as the most Christ-like man he ever met.

Viola believes followers of Christ need to recover grace—a rediscovery he calls regrace. He challenges readers to embrace humility in matters of political discourse and theological difference. With his trademark humor and direct approach, he lays out a model for graciously identifying and dealing with theological disagreement that is simple, practical, and down-to-earth.

  • Peter Enns — Biblical Scholar, Podcaster, Author of HOW THE BIBLE ACTUALLY WORKS: In Which I Explain How an Ancient, Ambiguous, and Diverse Book Leads Us to Wisdom, Rather Than Answers—and Why That’s Great News
Peter Enns is beloved for his irreverent, progressive, and faithful perspective on the Bible. In his previous books The Bible Tells Me So and The Sin of Certainty, Peter debunked common beliefs that we project onto the Bible which steer us in the wrong direction and, he argues, cause all sorts of spiritual problems. Now, Peter explains how the Bible actually works and why it speaks to us so powerfully even when it does not behave as we think it should. “The Bible becomes a confusing mess when we expect it to function as a rulebook for faith. But when we allow the Bible to determine our expectations, we see that Wisdom, not answers, is the Bible’s true subject matter.” HOW THE BIBLE ACTUALLY WORKS outlines the three defining characteristics of the Bible: that it is ancient, ambiguous, and diverse. These qualities, Enns maintains, demonstrate that humanity’s understanding of God is an ongoing process. Enns argues that the Bible itself invites readers to consider context and their own circumstances as they interpret and reinterpret scripture. HOW THE BIBLE ACTUALLY WORKS makes clear that there is no one right way to read the Bible. Moving us beyond the damaging idea that “being right” is the most important measure of faith, Enns’s freeing approach to Bible study helps us to instead focus on pursuing enlightenment and building our relationship with God—which is exactly what the Bible was designed to do. *Peter Enns is the Abram S. Clemens Professor of Biblical Studies at Eastern University in St. David’s, Pennsylvania, and has taught at Harvard University Theological Seminary and Princeton Theological Seminary. He is the host of The Bible for Normal People podcast, is a frequent contributor to journals and encyclopedias, and is the author of several books, including The Sin of Certainty, The Bible Tells Me So, and Inspiration and Incarnation.

  • Doug Lynam — Former Monk, Former Marine, Author of FROM MONK TO MONEY MANAGER: A Former Monk’s Financial Guide to Becoming a Little Bit Wealthy - And Why That’s Okay
Doug Lynam used to be a monk, and he’s now a financial advisor. He’s a sort of unicorn to most people, but that’s what makes this book so important. For too long religion and money have been held separate. But as Lynam says, “The cold, hard truth is that in this modern life we need money. We can’t live our lives and serve others without it.”Lynam joined a monastery, in part, to escape the world of money and ended up spending more time worrying about money than almost anyone in the outside world because the monastery was going broke – and he had to fix it. Another irony, directly related to the first, is that he learned he is good at helping people with their financial problems. The lessons Lynam learned as a monk made him realize that the most powerful way for him to have an impact in the world was to leave the monastery and advise people about their finances full time. From Monk to Money Manager, is for adults of all ages, religions, and political persuasions because the discussion of ethics and money impacts you regardless of your beliefs. He believes the lack of money is the key driver for most of the suffering in the world, and if we can face that problem squarely, honestly, and with good minds and hearts we can mitigate some of the worst problems in the world. More specifically, the book is aimed at anyone who wants to learn how to become wealthy while remaining an ethical person.

  • NUA
NUA is an award-winning innovative trad trio, bringing a fresh and unique sound to traditional music, creating their own distinctive original compositions, balanced with traditional and contemporary tunes drawn from Irish and Scottish traditions. Based in Toronto, Canada, NUA consists of three award-winning members: fiddle player James Law, guitarist Graeme McGillivray, and bodhrán player Jacob McCauley. The interaction between the three is what really makes the music shine, whether it be their soaring melodies or tasteful grooves. The original tune-writing of NUA gives their music its groundbreaking, adventurous quality, as demonstrated on their debut album BOLD and follow-up album FLOW. Bordering on progressive, while hinting at the traditions of the past, NUA’s compositions will take you on an exhilarating journey, creating an atmosphere and mood unique to the listener. The trio is also well known for their exciting incorporation of odd time signatures and polyrhythms, which give the music an electrifying lift and spontaneity. Each member adds his own distinctive sound and influence to the music. Although NUA is a trio with a sole melody player, the brilliant multi-tasking of each member is demonstrated countless times with perhaps a guitar-driven flat-picked melody, rhythmic fiddle playing, or melodic bodhrán playing to add to the mix. The ability of each member to take on multiple roles is one of the staples of NUA. This adds to a thrilling live experience and a “you just don’t know what’s coming next” approach! “Challenging melodies and rhythms ripped out at an impressive pace, without any loss of definition or detail. To achieve this level of impact with only three pairs of hands takes rare skill” (Irish Music Magazine)

  • Raine Hamilton
“Resonant, acoustic chamber folk with an otherworldly edge, and a lyric presence that cuts deep. Prism-clear vocals and strings; A combination of vocal agility and power. AWAKE. LISTENING. PRESENT.”
Raine’s new album, Night Sky (March 2018), tips between the earthly and the otherworldly; it is anchored in relatable lived experience, while reaching into the space just beyond, thinning the veil between here and there, affording safe passage to the rough and beautiful places. Raine’s ethereal voice and lyrics are at the forefront of these powerful and relatable tunes, written both in English and in French. Alongside cello + double bass, and with Raine on violin or guitar, these songs have a moving string quartet feel with a cosmic reach. Raine is also a charming and funny storyteller, pairing her vulnerable tunes with engaging story intros. Raine believes that music is for everyone and that we all have something to share. An experienced educator, Raine offers workshops in songwriting and fiddle tune writing (EN/FR). Raine also offers concerts with American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation, to help make live music and the community that comes with it accessible to the Deaf community. Raine has toured Canada extensively, driving, flying, and floating her way coast to coast. Highlights include: Performing songs with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra (3 times!), playing a concert in a cave (10 stories below the earth’s surface!), playing festivals across Canada (Home County, Filberg Fest, Lilac Fest, The Works, Harvest Sun, Harvest Moon, Trout Forest), playing for her passage on Via Rail, and meeting so many amazing humans along the way.

  • Kerri Rawson — (Daughter Of The BTK Killer) - Author of A SERIAL KILLER’S DAUGHTER: My Story Of Hope, Love and Overcoming
What is it like to learn that your normal, loving father is a serial killer? In 2005, Kerri Rawson heard a knock on the door of her apartment. When she opened it, an FBI agent informed her that her father had been arrested for murdering ten people, including two children. It was then that she learned her father was the notorious serial killer known as BTK, a name he’d given himself that described the horrific way he committed his crimes: bind, torture, kill. As news of his capture spread, Wichita celebrated the end of a thirty-one-year nightmare. For Kerri Rawson, another was just beginning. She was plunged into a black hole of horror and disbelief. The same man who had been a loving father, a devoted husband, church president, Boy Scout leader, and a public servant had been using their family as a cover for his heinous crimes since before she was born. Everything she had believed about her life had been a lie. Written with candor and extraordinary courage, A Serial Killer's Daughter is an unflinching exploration of life with one of America’s most infamous killers and an astonishing tale of personal and spiritual transformation. For all who suffer from unhealed wounds or the crippling effects of violence, betrayal, and anger, Kerri Rawson’s story offers the hope of reclaiming sanity in the midst of madness, rebuilding a life in the shadow of death, and learning to forgive the unforgivable.

  • JV’s Boogaloo Squad
Winnipeg native and Toronto keyboardist Joel Visentin, has a passion for the sound of the Hammond B3 organ. Originally a pianist, the organ first grabbed him while he was studying music at Humber College. He had the immense fortune to see the great Doug Riley in concert at the Humber auditorium, and ever since he has been striving to stand on the shoulders of Doug and other soul/jazz giants like George Benson, Jimmy Smith, Grant Green, and Jack Macduff. In 2015, he joined up with guitarist Adam Beer Colacino and drummer Jeff Halischuk to form his group JV’s Boogaloo Squad. The musical connection was electric and immediately all three recognized that they had stumbled on something greater than the sum of its parts. They have since worked their way up the club circuit becoming a regular fixture at Toronto’s jazz and blues ground zero, The Rex. This summer they were asked to perform at the Markham Jazz Festival where they had the great fortune of playing before living Jazz Organ Legend Dr. Lonnie Smith. With an extensive repertoire of classics from the soul hits of Stax and Motown as well as their own original music, no two concerts with JV’s Boogaloo Squad are alike. This blend of the familiar and the unknown, the distant past and the pressing moment keeps music lovers coming back to see them again and again. *JV’S BOOGALOO SQUAD releases their debut masterpiece GOING TO MARKET on Friday, February 15th, and launches a string of dates in Ontario and Quebec, including Kingston, Peterborough, Ottawa, Montreal and finally Thursday, February 21 at Burdock in Toronto.

  • Dr. Omri Gillath — Attachment Theory Expert, Professor of Psychology, University of Kansas
Dr. Omri Gillath's riveting TEDx talk explores his trailblazing research on the intrinsic benefits of secure relationships. Combining neuroimaging, gene mapping, and advanced cognitive techniques, his extensive research reveals that a healthy attachment with another person not only leads to happiness, but is integral to overall physical health. *Dr. Gillath’s research focuses on close relationships and their underlying mechanisms. In the past few years he has investigated the psychological aspect of behavioral systems, especially the attachment, caregiving, and sexual mating systems. He’s expanding this work by using neuroimaging techniques, physiological measures, and endocrine markers to examine a diverse range of correlates and underpinnings of socially significant behavioral systems. Dr. Gillath’s work explores the associations between a person's attachment style (relationship style) and goals and behaviors in the caregiving and sexual domains (e.g., ability to provide and receive compassionate care; interest in short- vs. long-term mating strategies). He is also exploring the effects of increasing people's sense of attachment security on their tendency to engage in prosocial behavior, their altruistic and sexual attitudes, and their goals, as well as their attentional strategies. In a separate line of research, Dr. Gillath is looking at online and offline social networks, their characteristics, and the way they change over time. He also looks at the links between one's attachment style and his or her social network.

What would you attempt to do if you knew that your success was a certainty? Most often it’s what we believe we are capable of that determines our path to greatness…or mediocrity. Diamond Dallas Page, former pro-wrestling champion turned fitness guru and inspirational powerhouse, knows all too well that, with the right attitude and a relentless work ethic, it’s possible to overcome any obstacle and become healthy and successful beyond your wildest dreams. He has proven it time and again; first with his own life, and then, over the last 15 years, as he’s helped his close friends and complete strangers completely transform their lives with his DDPY fitness system. Dallas also knows that the primary reason so many of us are stuck—whether in unhappy relationships, dead-end jobs, or with self-destructive habits—is because we choose not to truly take ownership of our own lives. Now with POSITIVELY UNSTOPPABLE: The Art of Owning It, he gets to the core of what may be holding you back from profound life change—physically, mentally, and emotionally—and offers a stepwise, no bullsh*t roadmap for achieving your ultimate goals… *DDP is a retired pro-wrestling champion. • Shirley Thiessen — JOURNEY
It’s not if, but when. Those who love will also grieve. Six years ago, Shirley Thiessen experienced what she describes as her worst nightmare. . . the death of child. Twelve days after celebrating her twenty-three-year old son’s wedding, Shirley was thrown into the unimaginable task of planning his funeral. Grief threatened to extinguish her divine spark. A crisis of faith and the loss of purpose led Shirley to the end of herself. Gradually, a new choice was made. With a promise to always say “yes” to participating, Shirley began to fervently ask God for opportunities to leverage her grief for His glory. She was, and is, desperate to see redemptive purposes in the pain. The resulting adventures are evidence that God’s power finds it full expression through brokenness. Shirley has written about her journey in the book, “The Little Black Funeral Dress – Five Things I wish I Had Known About Grief”.

  • Christina Rasmussen — Author of WHERE DID YOU GO?: A Life-Changing Journey to Connect with Those We’ve Lost
“Where did you go?” This was the first question Christina Rasmussen asked after the death of her husband. A young widow with two daughters, Christina would go on to become an esteemed grief educator who helped countless others rebuild their lives after loss. Yet, even as she learned to thrive again, that first heartbreaking question persisted. Even as she and her clients forged new paths and discovered new joy, the same questions remained: Are we capable of connecting to those who have passed on? What really happens after we die? As a professional grounded in science, Christina was a skeptic who shied away from the conventional mystical, supernatural, and religious descriptions of the afterlife—so she turned to what seemed “provable” to unravel the mystery of life beyond life: physics. What she found was beyond anything she could have expected: not only is there life after death, but we all have the ability to connect with loved ones who have passed on. Sharing an inspiring message of hope, optimism, and love, Where Did You Go? is a transporting step-by-step guide to journeying to the other side, from one of our most trusted voices on life after loss. Bridging the gap between the metaphysical and the measurable, it will change the way we grieve, the way we live and how we define our potential—in this life and the hereafter.
