  • CAMINO CONFESSIONS: Justin Skeesuck & Patrick Gray — I’ll Push You: A Heartfelt Film about 500 Miles, Two Best Friends & One Wheelchair
It All Started With Three Little Words. In the spring of 2012, Justin Skeesuck asked his best friend of nearly 40 years, Patrick Gray, to tackle the epic 500-mile pilgrimage across Northern Spain called the Camino de Santiago. The challenge? Justin lives life in a wheelchair. When asked, Patrick's response was simple and direct, he said, “I’ll push you.” Two years later, they started their journey and had absolutely no idea how they would make the 500 miles from France to the Cathedral in Santiago; over several mountain ranges like the Pyrenees, through rivers, and across the vast “desert of Spain" called the Meseta… they just knew they had to get there. Justin and Patrick had to rely on the help and strength of friends, acquaintances and even complete strangers in order to navigate the many challenges they faced on their 34-day journey. Since returning from Spain, they have used their heartfelt storytelling to share the comical details of their journey… the joys, the struggles, the beautiful relationships, and the lessons they learned in faith, hope, love and friendship. Their goal with the film is for others to walk away recognizing each life is not defined by its limitations, but is defined by what is accomplished in spite of those limitations.
*Born just over 36 hours apart, Justin & Patrick are life-long friends with a rich, deep relationship that spans beyond 40 years. They travel together, live life together through its ups and downs, and most importantly, will do anything for each other. Over the past 20+ years, a progressive neuromuscular disease has slowly taken away Justin’s ability to use his arms and legs. From each morning until night, Justin requires daily assistance in every aspect of life such as eating, getting dressed, bathing and even using the restroom. Though immensely challenging, Justin continues to live life to the fullest and maintains a positive attitude through it all!

    TODAY'S JOURNEY: William P. Young
About 10 years ago, The Shack, was a self published novel originally written as a Christmas gift for Paul Young’s kids. Then, with a marketing budget of a few hundred dollars, eventually the book sold over a million copies within a year, out of his garage. Today, The Shack has sold over 20 million copies worldwide. Recently, while staying at a Benedictine monastery on an island off the coast of the Western Sahara, Drew asked one of the monks to show him the oldest books they had in the library. The Brother placed this ancient document on a table but Drew quickly recognized the book underneath it. “A Cabanas” by William P. Young. Even though Drew was in a vow of silence, he was able to question the monk as to why this book was part of their library, since in Drew’s mind, The Shack is a book that challenges religion. The young Brother said that it was his favorite book. As a matter of fact, The Shack was a favourite amongst all the monks.

  • Cea Person — Author of NEARLY NORMAL: Surviving the Wilderness, My Family and Myself
A few years ago, Cea Sunrise Person wrote a memoir which became an instant bestseller and has been selling steadily ever since. In North of Normal, Cea wrote with grace and candour about her unconventional childhood—her early years living in a tipi in Alberta with her pot-smoking, free-loving counterculture family; the numerous misadventures she survived with her mother and her mother’s boyfriends; and the bold escape Cea made from her family at the age of thirteen through a modelling career. It is also the story of one girl’s deep-seated desire for normality—a desire that enabled her to risk everything, overcome adversity and achieve her dreams. After putting such a unique life on paper, one would expect Cea’s tale to be all told—but that’s far from the case. Her new book, Nearly Normal, is a continuation and furthering of her story, outlining pieces of her life she omitted from the first book. At the age of thirty-seven, Cea has built a life that looks like the normal one she craved as a child—husband, young son, beautiful house, enviable career. But her carefully art-directed world is about to crumble around her. As she confronts the death of her still - young mother, the disintegration of her second marriage and the demise of her business, all within just a few months, she finally faces the need to look at her past to make sense of her present. But even as she bared her soul through writing North of Normal, stories too difficult to reveal failed to make it to the page. Nearly Normal chronicles the many stories that were too difficult for Cea to reveal and were left untold. Settled into a new and much happier life after the release of her first book, she is nonetheless compelled to continue searching for answers about her enigmatic family. Drawing connections between her early experiences and later life mistakes, Cea identifies how her family’s extreme and often selfish behaviour contributed to her downfall. But more importantly, she discovers the value in the lessons they taught her, and the power of taking responsibility for her own choices in the face of great challenge.

  • Emma Cook
2016 FACTOR Juried Sound Recording recipient Emma Cook combines a powerful and haunting voice reminiscent of Sarah McLachan with the song stylings of Feist, Jenn Grant or Hannah Georgeas. She also knows what it means to struggle. The Toronto indie-folk singer was well on her way to making a name for herself before a falling tree branch caused a serious head injury and forced her to take a hiatus from music to focus on recovery. After a three year battle with Post-Concussive Syndrome, Emma drew 2016 to a close with the release of her third album Same Old Song, produced by Mitch Girio (Emma-Lee’s Never Just a Dream). The cover of Same Old Song shows a single tree branch, an ode to the artists ongoing fight to recover from her injuries and the power of music to get us through the hardest of times. Same Old Song debuted at #3 on the folk charts in Edmonton and landed Emma a synch licensing deal with Community Tree Music in Vancouver. Before her injury, Emma had logged over 100 shows across Canada, the US and the UK and had official showcases at NXNE, CMW & Indie Week. She was a 2008 Toronto Independent Music Awards nominee and received an Ontario Arts Council grant to record her second album “Hit & Run.” Written and co-produced by Emma, both of her albums have garnered fantastic reviews and sought the attention of campus radio, CBC and the Verge on XM Satellite Radio. The Ontario Arts Council again backed the young artist, awarding her an International touring grant which took her from Toronto down to Mississippi and back in Feb and March 2009, with stops at SXSW, and NYC’s famed Bitter End
