This week on The Counsel of Many: An unmarried teenage couple wants to know if they should tell their parents on Christmas Day that they’re expecting a child, or wait until the New Year.
"Let me start off by saying, I KNOW that getting pregnant wasn’t the smartest thing to do at our age (18). So before everyone starts in with “Having sex before marriage is a sin and now look what happened” I just want to say that my boyfriend and I have been together for about two years, we love each other very much and are planning on doing the “responsible” thing and getting married in the spring. We are both from Christian homes, both attend church, and are both part of the youth group. We’ve been sexually active off and on for about a year now and obviously just got careless. We’ve tried to be celibate but just seem to keep falling back into it – obviously! Anyway, the point is that my boyfriend thinks we should tell our parents the big news, actually on Christmas Day. He thinks they might be less rattled by the news if we tell them on Christmas Day because of the great moods they’ll be in. It might help them to celebrate the news rather than freak out about it. I’m not sold on it. My parents, no matter what day it is, are going to totally freak. But if we tell his parents on Christmas and not mine, then somehow it gets out or if my parents find out later that we told his parents way before we told them… it’s just gonna get way totally complicated. So, I’m just not sure what to do. Maybe your listeners who are parents could call in and let us know what they would want if it was their kid that got pregnant. Would they want to be told on Christmas Day? Or would that freak them out too much and wreck their Christmas?" -

Valeri Bure — Former NHL All Star, Champion of CBC's Battle of The Blades 2010
CBC's hit television reality show Battle Of The Blades crowned their 2010 champions just a couple of weeks ago, Olympian Ekaterina Gordeeva & her partner Valeri Bure. They were almost eliminated numerous times despite scoring the highest with the judges week after week. However, Val and Katia came away with the trophy in the end and Val's charity - Compassion Canada - was the recipient of $50,000! During his extensive NHL career, Val played for the Dallas Stars, St. Louis Blues, Florida Panthers, Calgary Flames, and the Montreal Canadiens. Born in Moscow, he was a member of the Russian National Team which was the only country to medal in Olympic hockey at both Nagano in 1998 and in Salt Lake in 2002. Val retired from hockey in 2004 and dedicated his time to being with his family. He married television actress Candace Cameron in 1996 and they now share a "full house" in California with their three children Natasha, Lev, and Maksim. He and Candace own a boutique winery in Napa Valley called Bure Family Wines.

This week on The Counsel of Many: a story that hit the news about a man who lost custody of his kids because he’s an agnostic. We’ll speak with the father then take your calls!
Craig Scarberry lost joint custody of his three children because he changed his religion from Christian to agnostic. “It blew my mind away. I’m a good, loving father, and this ruling has taken my children away. I wasn’t interfering in their right to be brought up in a Christian environment,” he said. Apparently the children still attend a Christian school and church services, just like they have done in the four years of the joint custody. The judge actually said in his pronouncement of the new custody arrangement that Craig “did not participate in the same religious training that the mother exercised and that he was agnostic.” Craig has until Dec. 1 to appeal the ruling, which has reduced his custody to visitation with his children four hours per week and on alternating weekends. “I thought I had the right to practice what you want to practice without persecution,” he said. “I feel like I’ve suffered the highest persecution ... I had everything taken away from me.” Is the fact that the father is no longer a Christian enough of a reason to restrict his access to the children? What would you say to this “Christian” mother? Mosab Hassan Yousef — Author of Son Of Hamas: A Gripping Account of Terror, Betrayal, Political Intrigue, and Unthinkable Choices

Tarek Fatah — Author, Broadcaster, Founder of The Muslim Canadian Congress
Tarek describes himself as “an Indian born in Pakistan; a Punjabi born in Islam; an immigrant in Canada with a Muslim consciousness, grounded in a Marxist youth." Author of Chasing a Mirage: The Tragic Illusion of an Islamic State, and his latest, The Jew is Not My Enemy: Unveiling the Myths that Fuel Muslim Anti-Semitism, Tarek has been a political activist since his teens in Pakistan where he was twice jailed for organizing protest campaigns against successive military governments in 1968 and 1970. A journalist by profession, Tarek and his family moved to Canada in 1987 where he has been the public face of progressive, liberal and secular Muslims. In December 2001, in the wake of the 9/11 attacks, he founded the Muslim Canadian Congress to provide a voice for Muslims who wanted to stand up to the threat of Islamic extremism. For ten years Tarek hosted the Saturday night TV show The Muslim Chronicle on CTS-TV and currently he co-hosts Strong Opinions on CFRB 1010. This week on The Counsel of Many: a young lady, seven months pregnant, has discovered that her fiancé is cheating on her and doesn’t want to get married anymore.
"I am hurting pretty badly right now. Five days ago I found out that my fiancé of four years had joined a swinger website and was talking to women behind my back. He did this once before to me a few years ago and it caused us to break up for seven months. I don't know what to do because I am now pregnant (seven months) with our daughter. We have a home together now. We were supposed to get married next year but I don't know now. Plus, when I talked to him about why he did this to me all he could say is he never got hit on in high school and never received compliments from women about how he looks, and he still doesn't. I asked him if I was enough, and he said yes, but apparently I am the only girl who has ever found him attractive. Which I know isn't true. He is a very good-looking guy. He also said he doesn't know about marrying me anymore since his parents got divorced three years ago and now his older brother, whom he is very close with, is getting a divorce this month. He said divorce is so prevalent that he doesn't want to risk it. He has fallen away from the Lord and his view of marriage has been destroyed by the world. I don't know what to do. I know I rebelled against the Lord when I had premarital sex. I guess this is my punishment. I am thinking I should just leave him and go live with my mom for a little while until I find my own place. It is going to be so hard with a baby coming but I will live with God's help. Any advice for me?" -
Do you agree with a Pastor who is forcing his church leaders to delete their Facebook accounts due to couples re-igniting old flames?
A pastor plans to ask his congregation this Sunday to delete their Facebook accounts because a number of couples in his church have admitted to marital problems due to reconnecting with past lovers though the social networking site. As well, the pastor is forcing about 50 married church leaders to delete their Facebook accounts. Apparently, if they won't stop using Facebook, they'll have to resign. -

Nick Vujicic — Author of Life Without Limits: Inspiration For a Ridiculously Good Life
Nick Vujicic entered this world with what some people would call impossible circumstances, a rare condition termed phocomelia where babies are born with malformed or missing limbs. As a young child, Nick's frustrations with his disability left him questioning his reason for being alive even to the contemplation of suicide. Despite some of his darkest and loneliest moments, he put his faith in God and chose to be happy and grateful because of his situation. Nick says, "Often people ask how I manage to be happy despite having no arms and no legs. The quick answer is that I have a choice. I can be angry about not having limbs, or I can be thankful that I have a purpose. I chose gratitude." Despite Nick's physical disability, he's truly living as though he has no limits. In Life Without Limits he offers readers encouragement and guidance, helping them find their life's purpose so that they, too, can live a fulfilling and ridiculously good life. Nick Vujicic began motivational speaking, and evangelism at the age of 17, and was soon traveling around the world having currently visited more than 32 countries sharing his testimony with millions of people, young and old alike. After founding a motivational speaking company, Attitude is Altitude, Nick began the non-profit ministry Life Without Limbs. -

Dr. Marv Penner — Canadian Director of Youth Specialties & YouthWorks!
Marv is an internationally known author, professor, speaker, and youth ministry veteran having spent nearly 40 years working with students and families. His biggest buzz still comes from spending time with teenagers, their parents, and the people who work most closely with them. Marv serves as the Communications Coordinator for the Canadian Roundtable on Youth and Young Adult Ministry and oversees the Canadian Centre for Adolescent Research, a think-tank that conducts research on Canadian youth and youth culture. He recently co-directed a major national study, What's Happening: The State of Youth Ministry in Canada. He has taught at more than 20 colleges and seminaries around the globe. This week on The Counsel of Many: a father is hurt that his daughter has chosen to marry someone from another faith and isn't sure he wants to pay for the wedding let alone attend.
"My daughter has fallen in love and is engaged to a boy who is not a Christian. He's not only not a Christian, he's a practicing believer in another religion. I don't want to mention which religion because I don't think it matters. What matters is that she has chosen to marry someone who is a devout follower of a religion which is NOT Christianity. She was raised in a Christian home and she has professed to be a Christian her entire life, so needless to say I am hurt and disappointed. I know I'm not supposed to be. I'm supposed to be happy for her no matter who she chooses to marry. I'm supposed to be accepting of all religions. Well the reality is that I'm not. I'm not happy that her future husband is of another faith, and I'm especially not happy with this particular faith. She is blinded by love and can't see that the road ahead for them is going to be very, very difficult if they think that both religions can be followed under the same roof, let alone when it comes to raising children. I've been told that I can't do anything about it, and I understand that, to a point. However, if she wants to flagrantly disregard her parents' feelings and marry someone she knows we don't approve of, then I'm not sure I want to pay for the wedding, let alone go to it. I know it sounds immature but this has hurt her mother and I beyond words. Without a doubt, there will most definitely be a rift in the family dynamics should this wedding happen. The question is, does anyone have advice for me as the father, especially as it pertains to coping with my hurt Of course, if anyone has any good ideas on how to break them up, I'm open for those suggestions as well. " -

- A couple wanting to “promote health” handed out condoms to the older kids on Halloween. They also handed out toothbrushes and candy bars.
- PricewaterhouseCoopers, one of Britain's largest accountancy firms, has launched an investigation after male staff began circulating an email which ‘rated’ new female employees in a top ten list based on their looks.
- An NPR commentator was fired for saying on The O’Reilly Factor: “When I get on the plane, I got to tell you, if I see people who are in Muslim garb and I think, you know, they are identifying themselves first and foremost as Muslims, I get worried. I get nervous."
- an NPR commentator wasn’t fired for referring to the evangelical belief of the Rapture, in which Christ's faithful would miraculously ascend from the earth before the Second Coming: "The evaporation of 4 million who believe this crap would leave the world an instantly better place."

Basically, it's a “How To” book attempting to help make pedophilia situations “less dangerous” and ultimately paving the way for lighter sentences should they ever be caught.”

This week on The Counsel of Many: a young lady has experienced a fair amount of rejection by her young adults group at church and has heard nothing from her pastor since leaving. She wants advice to figure out the best way forward.
"I have been mistreated by the young adults group in the church I attended for a year or so. When I started attending, I met some of the girls from the group. They seemed nice at first, one of the girls even offered to give me a ride to and from church because I live 90-minutes away. Over time, they started to become very ignorant and rude towards me. The girl that let me carpool with her would always have some sort of reason to not give me a ride. She only drove me home twice and once drove me halfway to my house, leaving me to take the bus the rest of the way. There were times where I'd try to say hi to them in church and they'd sometimes ignore me altogether as if I wasn't actually talking to them. I've sat with the group a few times during the service. The people in the group that I don't know would just give me a strange look and would not bother to introduce themselves to me. The girls that I do know would not introduce me to the ones that I did not know. There was also one time where after service I was waiting for the girl that was driving me home because she was praying for people at the altar. As I waited for her, a bunch of girls were sitting in front of me who were carrying on a very loud conversation. They should have taken it outside in the foyer, and not one of them bothered to say hello or just introduce themselves to me or even include me in the conversation. Before I left the church in May 2010, I wrote the young adult’s pastor a long email telling him I was not happy with my experience at the church. He never emailed me back about it. I left and figured that no one would notice that I was gone. The other day one of the girls called asking why I hadn't been at church lately. That's when I told her everything and that the young adult’s pastor not emailing me back was the last straw. She started to feel bad and kept apologizing on behalf of the group and the pastor. She said it was complete negligence of them to do that but felt it happened because it's a large church and it's hard to keep in contact with everyone. She also said that from talking to me, it opened her eyes to keep in touch with people like me who can go absent for long periods of time with no explanation. She kept giving me the "God talk" as well by saying that it's important to have fellowship and congregate with other believers. I just kept telling her that if I come back, I'll come back. If I find another church, I find another church. It's not the first time I've been mistreated or misunderstood by "Jesus people." If I do go to another church, how can I prevent this from happening again? If I stay, what should I do? Should I only go for Christmas and Easter? Because I was bullied as a child, I'm very sensitive about certain things and it takes me time to forgive and forget. Should I try emailing the young adults pastor again? What is his role in this type of situation? What should I do if any of the others from the group try to call or send messages to me on Facebook about it and try inviting me to any upcoming events or get-togethers?" -

This week on The Counsel of Many: a lady wants to know if what she saw in her apartment was really her mother, who has been dead for a few years, or not.
"My mother died of cancer a few years ago and I miss her a lot, but not enough to make me imagine things. Ever since I moved into my apartment weird things have been happening. Most stuff I can write off or rationalize (because I’m a fairly level headed and rational person) but there is one event which still has me baffled. A few months ago I had an incredibly vivid dream about my mother. I mean it was as if she was really alive. Then, a few weeks ago I woke up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom and when I came back into my bedroom, there sitting on the edge of my bed was my mother. I sort of screamed out then froze and my mother just sat there, not looking at me once. I spoke out loud to her but she never reacted to me or talked back. So I decided to move slowly towards her. The closer I got the more faded she became. Then finally, as I was about 3 feet from her, she pretty much just wasn’t there any more. I don’t believe in ghosts. I tend to think that anything appearing as a ghost is simply an evil or demonic spirit pretending to be something familiar so as to deceive us. However, I really don’t see the point of this so called deceptive appearance of my mother. I had been praying to God that I could have just one more conversation with my mom, and now this happened. Was it just my mind tricking me? Was it Satan tricking me? Or was it God answering my prayer. Would He even allow such a thing to happen or would that go against the Bible? I’m so confused and would like to hear other people’s opinions on my experience.” -

Should former colonel Russell Williams be executed?
Even those who typically oppose the death penalty have wavered on this one. Last week, one of Canada’s top military men was convicted and sentenced to life in prison, which in Canada means 25 years. This, after he subjected Jessica Lloyd (27) and Corporal Marie-France Comeau (37) to hours of beatings, bondage, and repeated sexual assaults, all of which was recorded on video and photographed. Both girls were then killed after pleading for their lives. The list of deviant crimes committed by Williams was so horrific and so long that it took a court clerk 34 minutes to read them into the record. So… can a case ever be made for capitol punishment, and is this it? -

This week on The Counsel of Many: a wife is bugged that her husband has started going to another church because he can’t stand the worship music at their old church and wants to know if she should insist that the family all go to the same church.
"We have been going to the same church as a family for years. Our kids have pretty much grown up there. They were dedicated there. Last year my husband seemed to be acting out in a weird passive aggressive way by always making the family late to church. We got in a big fight about it one day and I found out that he was making us late because he hates the worship music at our church, so by the time we eventually got there, he’d only have to endure one song. My husband is very musically gifted and is very selective about what music he listens to. I told him I wanted him to just put up with it for the sake of the kids – in other words, I think that a family should attend the same church. He tried for a bit but eventually he just slipped back into making us late again. Eventually we agreed to take two cars to church and I just took the kids and left without him. This led to my husband sometimes not even showing up at all. Anyway, I just recently found out that he has been attending another church in the mornings, while his family attends the one we used to all go to – AS A FAMILY. I’m bugged that he didn’t tell me but I’m even more bugged that he’s just decided to go to a different church then his family! So I guess I’m asking if anyone else sees my point. Should I stand my ground on this one? Should I insist that he come with his family to church or should I just let it go? Is it weird for family members to go to different churches?" -
Should Drew have been placed on leave as a volunteer hospital chaplain because of his crisis of faith or not?
Last week, the chaplaincy department at Drew's local hospital notified him that: "The Pastoral Committee felt that during your public questioning of faith and of God it may prove challenging to provide faith and guidance to patients and families in times of crisis." While Drew has submitted to their request that he take a leave of absence while he sorts out his spiritual questions, and for the most part, understands their decision, he wonders if others feel this was the correct response. At what point does doubt negate the ability to minister? How much faith should one have to be able to pray for others? But then again, if someone doubts the existence of a God, then maybe being a hospital chaplain isn't the best ministry to be involved with? -

John Martin — Author of Under Pressure, Permission Changes Everything
Under Pressure begs the reader to ask some difficult questions about themselves, their lives and the world we live in. Why do we do the things we do? What influences and motivates us and do we have the ability to live our lives differently? The first half of the book examines “the Red letters”, the six ugliest, most dangerous, hurtful, harmful words in the English language. The second half looks at the power of permission. Educated in Philosophy and Theology at university, John was ordained a Protestant minister, serving in that capacity for ten years. During his time as a cleric, John became interested in specialized ministry. He worked on the streets of Toronto with the homeless, needy, disenfranchised and lost. From there, he spent the next several years as chaplain in the cancer ward of a large Canadian hospital.

Tania Fiolleau
Tania was trapped in an abusive relationship with a man who tried to run her over with his car. In order to escape this hell with her children, she needed to win sole custody but Tania did not have the means to pay for the associated legal fees. Desperate for money, she answered a misleading add in the paper and ultimately accepted a job in the sex trade. Being a fast learner with a good sense for business, Tania ended up becoming a Madame and was responsible for turning around a brothel in financial trouble. She then purchased one of the leading brothels in Vancouver. Eventually, $350,000 and four years later, with the Supreme Court judge taking nine months to render a decision, the Supreme Court awarded her sole custody. Now Tania needed to decide whether she would follow through on her promise to God to get out of the business should her prayers be answered.

My husband and I are in our late 20s, have been married for 3 years but do not "yet" have children. We have both been raised in Christian homes, brought up to value marriage, and to expect and work towards a life in line with our marital vows. This means striving towards a lasting marriage ('Til death do us part), a faithful marriage (forsaking all others), and a selfless & committed marriage (in sickness and in health). However the last year has just thrown up in my face how those vows were probably just words to me and how my family heritage of a strong belief in the sanctity of marriage may not be my own, but me merely following my families status quo. Bottom line: I am far too weak to continue in this marriage. I know I should, but I am desperate. About a year ago my husband fell from a roof top at his construction job becoming a quadriplegic. This was absolutely devastating for both of us. My husband had his mobility taken away, we have lost our sole source of income, and the dreams we both shared about children and grandchildren completely destroyed. In all this, my selfishness is starting to act up. Do I want to continue in this marriage? Do I want to live in a sexless marriage, at least in the traditional sense of the word? Do I want to give up the dream of children? During our many discussions since the injury, my husband has almost begged me to leave him because he feels such shame and self hatred for "being a burden." (I assure him that I love him and that he is not a burden.) He has even suggested an open marriage with a "Don't ask, Don't Tell." policy for my benefit (That seems wrong to me.) I guess I am stuck right now between three impossible solutions. I do not feel that divorce is the right thing. I believe that an open marriage is still adultery. However, I am also emotionally drained, depressed and I am mourning the future my husband and I have lost. I love my husband, but I feel too weak to make this work, though I know I should. Is there grace from God for intentional/knowing sin (divorce/open marriage)? Any feed back would be appreciated. -
Do you believe in a literal Hell?
Is there a lake of fire which awaits all those who reject Jesus Christ as their Saviour? Will everyone who hasn’t fully surrendered their lives to God, asked for forgiveness of their sins and chosen to follow Christ, be punished eternally in torment and darkness, with weeping, wailing, gnashing of teeth? Or is there a different definition of Hell which could also be backed by Scripture?

This week on the Counsel of Many: a man wants to know if his pastor should resign or not because it’s just been discovered that he sexually molested his own child over 20 years ago.
"I go to a pretty prominent church and recently we just found out that one of our pastors had molested his son. The details have been kept fairly confidential out of respect for the family but the pastor has assured everyone he has confessed this sin to God and his family and that they have forgiven him. While the church leaders deliberate on this situation and whether to keep him on staff or not, the congregation is left to consider their own feelings. Questions like; do we want this man to stay? Is he trustworthy? Does the fact that it happened so long ago have any impact? We know that no one is perfect but knowing what we know, does have an impact on trust, especially when it comes to a community of all ages. And I guess if we either find out that there have been other children abused or, God forbid, it should happen again in the future after we knew what we now know, are we then liable, both morally and legally? Bottom line, is it worth the risk? I guess forgiveness is one thing but allowing someone to continue in spiritual leadership is another. Isn’t it? Any opinions out there on this? We sure could use some objective feedback." -
Child/Teen Evangelism: Do we need to rethink how it’s done?
There’s no question that the younger one is the more susceptible we are to the power of suggestion. So with that in mind, maybe we should stop scaring the hell out of our kids? Do you think that some churches or ministries should rethink how they proselytize their youth? Have you ever witnessed someone manipulate young people “into the kingdom?” Whether asking sleep deprived teenagers to become Christians at the end of a weekend retreat or terrifying children with images of hell, how far is too far? Maybe we should reconsider even doing “child evangelism” altogether? “But Jesus said suffer the children…” “We’re all to have child like faith aren’t we?” Watch this clip and ask yourself; is it a genuine decision if the person has no choice. What choice do these kids really have? -

As the founding director of a shelter for men experiencing homelessness, he’s an advocate on behalf of people experiencing homelessness, and is an accomplished public speaker on the topic of housing and homelessness. Dion is currently the chairperson of Street Level, a national roundtable on poverty and homelessness. He has also just received his MTS from Wycliffe College at the University of Toronto.

This week on the Counsel of Many: a newlywed wife is creeped out by her husband’s insistence that they pray both before and after sex and wants to know if there’s something wrong with her spiritually.
"My husband and I have been married for about 4 months. It has been wonderful. We are both in our early 30s, have known one another since our early teens and have been best friends for all that time. To be married to the wonderful man that is my husband is great, but to know I will be sharing my life with someone who is also my best friend, and knows everything about me yet fell in love with me anyway is more than I could have hoped for. We started dating two years ago. Two months before our marriage my husband and I gave our hearts to Jesus and have been trying to follow him, which includes becoming born-again virgins. Since this time my husband has been very pro-active about not just being a Christian internally, but following him externally as well and being very intentional about this. This means praying before meals, church attendance, daily devotionals as a couple etc. All of which I enjoy, both for the spiritual benefit and for the way it brings us closer together as a couple. However one issue that does bother me is my husband’s insistence on praying before and after we have sex. He thinks we should pray for God to bind us together as husband and wife. He asks for the Holy spirit to free us from our insecurities, lusts and inhibitions so that sex will not just be selfish but will be other focused and hence love and marriage building. He also thinks we should offer prayers of gratitude for each other and for the privilege of being able to have sanctified Godly sex. I understand that sex was God’s idea, that he created us male and female, and that He created sex for pro-creation and for enjoyment within marriage. I understand that God sees all and knows all etc. etc. etc. However I must admit that incorporating prayer into my sex life seems creepy. It’s a massive mood killer. It feels as if my parents are in the room. It just feels creepy and very un-erotic. Is something wrong with me spiritually? Is this meshing of spirituality with sexuality healthy? Is my husband right? Is something wrong with my faith walk that sex and God seem to be at odds? Advice and insight would be appreciated.” -
In the same way that a man was recently charged with fraud for practicing witchcraft and charging for promises of solving people's problems should prosperity doctrine preachers be charged with fraud as well? Is there a difference?
A man is due in court next week on charges of fraud for claiming to have the ability to practice magic/witchcraft and offering promises of solving all your problems in return for money. On any given Sunday, preachers around the world are telling their congregation that they should make a “seed offering” and trust that God will come through for them. Promises are made claiming that the size of the financial “gift” is in direct per potion to the amount of faith one has, which in turn will dictate how much God will “bless you.” Do you see a similarity to the witchcraft and fraud case, or are they totally different situations? -

Patricia
Patricia started following Christ around the age of 26. Twelve years later, desperate for love, she was pregnant and living with the emotional and verbally abusive father. As time went on, Patricia couldn’t take it anymore and moved out, spending weeks in women’s shelters with her six month old. Unfortunately, Patricia never felt that church was a safe place to look for support or acceptance because of numerous subtle acts of rejection. She certainly wasn’t embraced. Patricia eventually went back to school, is now a teacher and is raising her five year old son on her own. She really wants to encourage the church to change their attitudes to single mothers, especially those who follow Christ, yet still “sin.”

This week on the Counsel of Many: a lady is worried that her sister’s lifestyle is having a bad impact on her sister’s child and wants to know the best way to confront her.
“I'm worried about my sister and her four year old daughter. My sister left her verbally abusive boyfriend in the spring (so far, so good) and moved in to the apartment building where my husband and I live. I thought this was going to be great. We could be supportive to her in this transitional time. Instead, she has gone from being in a highly repressive relationship to what, in my opinion, are too many freedoms. It seems like she is drinking almost every day and up late with loud music playing after her daughter is in bed. My niece's learning is a little behind other children her age. I guess that is to be expected with all the trauma that comes with a broken home, but I feel like my sister is just making it worse. I don't have any children, so no, I don't know what it's like to be a parent. But anyone can see that a four year shouldn't be around alcoholics and drug addicts on a regular basis, right? When I just barely hinted to my sister that maybe this wasn't the best atmosphere for a child, she first yelled at me, then closed right up. Since then she barely speaks to me. I don't know what to do! How can I help both my sister and my niece?” -

If you were church shopping, how much would the pastor’s weight or attire or race play a role in your decision? And if you’re under 35, is there a “cool” factor involved? Or is it all purely based on what they preach and how they preach it? -
Would you have a problem with your children visiting a mosque for a school trip?
A group of schoolchildren who were visiting a Mosque as part of their Social Studies class, actually took part in prayers and as a result, a lawsuit is pending further investigation. According to reports, the parents were told their children would be learning about the architecture of a mosque and they would be allowed to observe a prayer service. But the students wound up being given a lecture on the Prophet Muhammad, and some boys participated in a midday prayer service. A video of the fieldtrip shows a spokeswoman for the mosque telling students, “You have to believe in Allah, and Allah is the one God, the only one worthy of worship, all forgiving, all merciful." Would this concern you as a parent, or not? -

“I’ve been a believer for the last 22 years. Married and divorced twice - cannot say I really loved any of the guys. Disappointed with the world, I was lead to accept that if I married a "nice" Christian man, things would work out. The first guy was completely irresponsible (left 19 years ago and does not want to be found) and the second guy - 12 years later - got aggressive and pushed me around one too many times. I have been seeing someone for the last 6 months and I want to stay with this man. We are both disappointed with marriage, do not intend to get married again, but are now moving in together. My two children (21 and 19 years old) and my parents, do not accept the idea. They say we are rushing into it and I am not taking their wishes or needs into consideration. They do not want him around. What do you think? Should we move in together despite how the 'kids' feel?” -

Some believe that once you have surrendered your life to God, repented of your sins, asked for forgiveness and begun to follow Christ as your Lord that you are “saved” from God’s wrath and punishment for the rest of your life. Saved no matter what! Eternal Security! Actually, some believe that you actually had no say in the matter whatsoever – that your “choice” was pre-destined. Once saved - always saved! Others believe that you can loose your Salvation or walk away from your Faith. What do you believe? -

This week on the Counsel of Many: a man is upset at previous guests who preached pacifism and wants to know if anyone else is upset when church leaders say that Christians shouldn’t fight back.
Regarding the May 15th episode with Bruxy Cavey and Greg Boyd: It always astounds me that these people actually believe that they can go on a talk show and say whatever they like with absolutely no regard for the hurt they cause. They give no thought to the grief they cause to mothers who are left tearful for days or men whose guts they leave twisted and tormented over what spews from their mouths. Why? Because they are on a talk show or command an audience? These people, who “do lunch” and wear trendy clothes or “current” business attire and have the luxury of holding hundreds, maybe thousands of cult followers in their verbal grasp. They write and preach on the “wrongness” of the warrior, soldiers, police officers who run toward the sound of the guns and gunfire while they cower under or behind pulpits and run faster that everyone else in fear of losing their lives. They shriek from behind their pulpits, “Don’t kill them! Don’t kill them” yet offer no prayers or thanks to the warrior who is willing to give his life to save their miserable lives. Yet we know that we are the last line of defence of innocent people who can’t or won’t fight to protect themselves or their families or friends. We know that if these determined killers get by us, innocent people will suffer and die very brutally. These pacifists of the world are sheep at the mercy of wolves that are all too ready to prey on the flock. Except for the sheepdog, the warrior, the soldier, the police officer who stands watch over the sheep, who sometimes must become a predator to protect the sheep. But like the sheep, the pacifist hates the sheepdog that stands silently watching over them, listening to all the baaing and bleating about nothing. What a disgraceful legacy these so called pacifists leave. Pacifists live cowardly, lame lives because they know no God. However, what a legacy when men like Bruxy Cavey & Greg Boyd justify it and then preach it in the name of God. May God have mercy on them.” -
A Florida pastor has agreed to cancel a planned Koran burning ceremony on Sept. 11th at his church. Is this a good move or should he stick to his guns?
Some say Pastor Terry Jones has bowed to criticism, others are saying that it's part of an alleged agreement to move the Islamic centre planning to be built near ground zero. Originally he had planned a Koran burning ceremony this Saturday at his church, which set off international condemnation and threats of violence against Americans around the world. On a side note, do you have a problem with a Mosque being built close to Ground Zero? -

“Sorry to take over the Counsel Of Many this week folks, but I thought this was important enough to hijack the segment for myself! As some of you might know, during the last show of Season 7, while interviewing apologist Dr. Ravi Zacharias, I let the cat out of the bag! I verbalized the fact that I’m not convinced there is a God and that I feel pretty close to walking away from my faith. In the next few minutes my mobile phone went crazy and when I got back home I’d received numerous emails from various people saying various things. My reasons for feeling like “jumping” are plenty. However, the summarizing point would be best explained by a simple illustration. Imagine a soldier at war, overseas for 30 years. Each week he would write at least one letter to his father back home. Each week he would expectantly wait for the one who supposedly loves him unconditionally, to write him back or possibly even come for a visit. Any kind of personal interaction would do. He’s heard through his friends and other soldiers just how much his father loves him, but those rumours of Glory aren’t enough to sustain his faith in his father anymore. Every once in a while a friend would tell the soldier stories of how the last time they were overseas, they ran into the soldier’s father. His friends would comment on how amazing his father was and just how loved they felt by the soldier’s father. But they were still just rumours… Anyway, I’ll explain more of my journey during the show, but the question is: considering my deep level of doubt in the existence of a God, should I step down as the host of The Drew Marshall Show or should JOY 1250 just refuse to carry my show?” -

"I have a friend who is suicidal. He has absolutely no desire to live any more and plans on killing himself this summer before we have to go back to University. The only thing stopping him from actually ending his own life is the fear of ending up in Hell. I really want to help him but have absolutely no idea what to say or do. His father is a Pastor in a big church and his family is obviously pretty big into church, but my friend just feels suffocated and confused by all the religious stuff in his life. Other than praying for him, what can I do? He won't talk to anyone else but me. I guess we're sort of dating so that makes all of this even more confusing and unbearable. If he actually commits suicide and I was the only one who knew he was going to do it and I couldn't or didn't do anything to stop it." -

This week on the Counsel of Many: a husband is upset that his wife is fat and wants to know if that's really such a crime.
“I need some advice on a no-win subject. My wife is fat and I don’t know what to do to help her. We’ve been married for over 20 years and have two kids almost out of the house. I don’t want people to think she’s just had kids, or that she’s lazy, or that she has an eating problem. She’s active, eats pretty well, and has just been putting on weight slowly over the years after having kids. I’ve tried subtle ways to bring up the subject only to get shot down. She is completely aware that she is fat and has become more and more sensitive to the subject of weight whenever anyone brings the topic up. The other night there was a Dateline story about a pastor who apparently killed his wife because she was fat. This sent her over the edge. She is not happy with her weight (otherwise she wouldn’t be so sensitive and she’d be more proactive about doing something about it) and I’m not happy with her weight. However it feels like society is telling me that I’m not allowed to feel this way and that I should lover her no matter what. Well, the cold, hard truth is that as she becomes fatter I find my attraction for her (inside and out) decreasing. I’ve never, in my life, wanted to be with a fat woman. They might be amazing women but I am just not attracted to them. And now I’m being made out to be the bad guy here. Is it so wrong to not want to be married to a fat woman? I don’t call her names or make fun of her weight but I’m sick of dancing around the issue. It’s not like she has been horribly disfigured by a fire or something. This is her doing - her choice. It’s not genetic in her case, it’s about letting herself go. I’m not saying I want a divorce. I’m just asking, am I really such a bad person for not wanting my wife to be fat? And what can I do? Nothing? Really?” -

The reasons mentioned for boycotting the store were, Drew “is not a Christian,” Drew “is a heretic,” and Drew’s show “is dangerous.” Even though this didn't phase Larry and he has chosen to still support our show, we thought we’d give you an opportunity to call in and approach Drew, in love :), about anything he might have said which has caused you offence. " Over the last year my wife and her friends have really gotten into some stuff that I’m not too happy about at all, namely the New Age practices of Reiki, Iridology, Reflexology and Acupuncture. There’s a bunch of others as well, but these four are the main ones. I’ve told her to stop doing this stuff but she sees nothing wrong with it. I’ve bought her books and shown her websites which clearly explain that these practices are based in New Age/Occult traditions. In my opinion, Christians should have nothing to do with these things. Her friends have convinced her otherwise and I am furious with her. Not only has she totally ignored my warnings and advice, but she is opening herself up, and by default our family, to demonic influence. As the spiritual head of the house I feel it’s my responsibility to protect our family from evil. This has put a real strain on our marriage, to the point where I’m not sure I even want her in our house. Evil is evil – so what should I do? Am I out of line on this one? Men, if this was your wife, what would you do?” -

This week on the Counsel of Many: a woman’s family has been torn apart by her daughter’s husband having an affair with his wife's sister and the mother doesn’t know what to do.
"My husband and I are in our mid 60s and have been married for 40 years. We have 4 children (2 sons, 2 daughters) and 8 wonderful grandchildren. The last two years has seen our close knit family thrown into upheaval and conflict that threatens to destroy the peace, love, faith and affection my husband and I worked for 40 years to lay as the foundation of our family. Here’s the story: Two years ago, my oldest daughter’s husband was tragically killed in a head on collision with a drunk driver, instantly widowing our daughter and leaving their three children fatherless. For emotional and financial reasons my oldest daughter and her children moved in with our youngest daughter. What began as an act of Christ like love and selflessness ended up causing even more pain. Because my youngest daughter’s husband was laid off at the time, the role of emotional comforter and support to my oldest daughter and three kids fell to him. What began as emotional support turned into an emotional affair, as being needed and confided in awoke feelings of love in my son in-law for my oldest daughter. It eventually became physical. In late 2009 my oldest daughter and my son-in-law confessed what had happened and stated that they had plans to move out together. He intended to get a divorce and eventually marry my oldest daughter. Naturally, this absolutely wrecked my youngest daughter. Tears, rage, rejection, hurt, a suicidal crisis and depression has been her struggle since finding out. The fact that the transition out of the home has not been finalized has only rubbed salt into the wound of this massive betrayal. The other children, grandchildren and husband have diverse opinions. My Husband thinks we should have nothing to do with that "skank" (his words), meaning our oldest daughter. My oldest son agrees with my husband, that we should disown her until repentance and amends are made. I understand the anger they express (as I feel it too), but I can't turn my back on my own daughter! My youngest daughter has refused to attend several family functions while her sister and "husband" are in attendance. She has threatened to disown us, her parents, if we continue seeing her older sister. I don't want to lose my youngest daughter either. WWJD? Forgive and welcome our daughter back? Turn his back? Or is my Pastor right when he advised "It does not have to be an all or nothing approach to this. What your older daughter did was wrong, yes, and as followers of Christ we should work towards peace, reconciliation and restoration whenever and wherever possible. However, sometimes the road to restoration and redemption comes through giving evil a name, and challenging it so as to promote the truth and the realization that evil is not defeated by good, but evil is ultimately self defeating. If the principles of ‘dis-ownership’ of your daughter can aid in her realizing that, then maybe a time limited back-turning may be what is needed." I don't know what to think. Please help! What would Jesus do? What should we do? Offer her compassion and unconditional love? Disown her? Or give her an ultimatum of "repent, make amends, break off the relationship etc., or you are not welcome in our home anymore?” -
Would you fight the opening of a strip club near your church?
A church recently lost its battle with council over the approval of a strip club only 150 feet away. If this happened by your church, would you fight it? What if your church was located in an older, run down part of the city or an industrial section of town? Would it still bother you? Why? Didn’t Jesus hang out with people who did questionable things? Wouldn’t this be a perfect opportunity to minister to people who wouldn’t normally set foot inside a church? Or is it just a blatant act of disrespect by council to approve a strip club so close to a church? Would the ladies in your church be offended? -

This week on the Counsel of Many: a man is angry that his church is “ministering” at the Gay Pride Parade because he feels that resources would be better spent on starving children.
“I saw this coming and now that it’s here, I’m extremely upset. My church, which I have faithfully attended for years, has decided to go the Gay Pride Parade and hand out free water during the festivities and then hang around afterwards to help clean up the filth left by people celebrating homosexuality. I’ve spoken up about how I feel - like this is a waste of time and resources - but no one else in my church seems to feel the same way. Personally I feel quite strongly that there are far more worthy projects we could be involved with! Handing out water to people who can afford fancy lattes and then helping to pick up “gay agenda paraphernalia” trash and condoms, used and otherwise, seems like a complete waste of time when children are dying of starvation. Am I the only one who thinks like this? I wouldn’t call this “witnessing” and I certainly don’t think we should take any part in a day that celebrates sin. Next year our church is even talking about entering a float in the parade. I’m not sure I’ll be attending here that long anyway. Am I out of line here or does anyone else agree with me?” -
Should a Christian recording artist stop being a “Christian” recording artist if they “come out” or just keep doing what they’ve been doing? And if they come out, should Christian radio stations still play their music?
Ray Boltz and Jennifer Knapp have both recently outed themselves. Both have written songs which are still being played on Christian radio, including JOY 1250. If you were the Program Director at this station, would you continue to play all of their songs, just keep the theologically sound ones, or remove them all? -

Austin Gutwein — Author of Take Your Best Shot: Do Something Bigger Than Yourself
At the age of nine, Austin Gutwein was moved when he learned there were over 15 million children orphaned by HIV/AIDS - 12 million living in sub-Saharan Africa. Thinking everyone was doing something to help these children, Austin decided he had to do his part, too. He decided to make a difference for just one orphan—one free throw at a time. That first year, Austin went to his school gymnasium and shot 2,057 free-throws representing the 2,057 children who would lose their parents during one school day. Now, in its sixth year, Austin’s basketball marathon – Hoops of Hope – has spread around the world. Austin’s passion has motivated tens of thousands of kids, teens, and adults to make a difference. Austin and Hoops of Hope have raised over $2,000,000 for orphaned children in Africa. Since 2004, Hoops of Hope has helped build 2 medical clinics and a high school serving 1,000 children in rural Zambia, 2 HopeCenters in Swaziland, and built a water project in Kenya. They have provided hundreds of bicycles and supplied medical clinics with more than 1,000 medical caregiver kits to assist HIV/AIDS infected parents with the basic supplies they need to live longer so they can provide for their children. The money Austin’s organization has raised has kept thousands of children in Africa from becoming orphans. Our hope today is that Austin and his father will inspire others to ask themselves the question: “What can I do?”

This week on the Counsel Of Many: a man wants some advice about sharing his faith with his father before he dies.
“My father is getting closer to the age where he very likely could pass away at any time or begin to loose his faculties. This causes me great concern as I don’t believe he has surrendered his life to God and asked for the forgiveness of his sins. I would like nothing more than for him to, even in his later years, begin to follow Jesus. We’ve had a somewhat strained relationship through the years, but we have had the odd talk about Jesus, faith, God, etc. However, he comes from a generation that just doesn’t feel comfortable talking about this subject. He says he believes there is a God and that Jesus is the son of God but he also says that he feels no inclination to take his faith to another level. In other words, he doesn’t think he needs to become “born again” like me. So I would like some advice from people in a similar situation. Why is it so hard to talk about God to our parents? Why does that generation struggle to comprehend the relational aspect of faith? Should I bring his personal faith up again and risk offending or upsetting him? What can I say to make him see the need for becoming “born again”? I just really love him and when I think about the possibility of my father dying and spending eternity separated from his Heavenly Father – let alone me and my family – well it’s just too much to bear. Please, if anyone has some advice for me, I’m willing to listen.” -
Would you let your 16-year old sail around the world?
Abby Sunderland, the 16-year-old who tried to become the youngest sailor ever to circle the globe alone, was recently rescued after her boat became disabled during a storm in the Indian Ocean. Is 16 just too young to attempt to sail around the world alone? The family are Christians and say they were trusting God. Is that a good example of faith or ignorant parenting? Abigail’s father said, “We are born-again Christians, and we don't make any decision just based on feeling or even on sound knowledge. We also pray about it. The conviction of prayer and the answer to prayer has led to where we are with Abigail's campaign.” Abby’s 17-year-old brother Zac became the youngest person to complete a solo voyage around the world, so this isn’t the parent’s first experience “trusting God.” So does Abby’s father get a parenting thumbs up or thumbs down? -

A few years ago, Drew interviewed Pastor Peter Rigo from Dominion Christian Centre in Hamilton. Peter's ministry was featured on the investigative journalism show W-5 which claimed that he's a controlling and manipulative leader of a cult who has convinced many of his parishioners to abandon their families for the church. Since then, the church has had it's charitable tax status revoked. Cole and Nettie were volunteer leaders at this church, but have since moved on - with God and this thing we call "church."

"I am an evangelical Christian who has family in Montreal. One of my sisters has been living common-law with her boyfriend for a number of years. On a few occasions she has asked me to stay with them when I visit Montreal. I've told her that I would consider it in the future, but I am not sure whether or not it would be prudent for me to agree to staying with them, since they are living in sin. If I agree to stay with them, I'm afraid that it may give our family the message that I condone their living arrangement. Should I continue avoiding staying with them unless they make marriage vows to God?" -

At age 26, Rhonda Funk was a single mother and pregnant with her second child. Learning that her boyfriend was engaged to another woman and that he may pose a danger to her and her children, she found herself faced with making an impossible decision. This week on the Counsel Of Many: a mother is worried about her adult son and the "insane" mother of his child who constantly stalks him.
“Last year my adult son fell into a sexual relationship with a woman who has been stalking him for ten years. She moved to this community to be close to him after his last relationship broke up. When he tried to break off the relationship with her last December, she became pregnant with his child. I know, stupid move to have unprotected sex with a woman who is "insane" - and believe me she is - but that's what happened. Now she calls and shows up at his door five or six times a day demanding that he talk to her. She refuses to leave when he asks her to, which he does when he feels himself about to lose it. He has to physically remove himself from the premises to get away from her and if he walks away instead of taking his car, she follows him - even if he has his eight year old son with him. I was here once when she showed up on the doorstep for the third time on the same day, and when my son refused to talk to her - after giving in twice before and already spending six hours with her that day - she sat on the rocking chair on his porch and stared through the window at him for two hours - in a terrible storm! I am currently staying with my son for a few weeks and am seriously concerned for his safety - not to mention the stress of having to deal with her every day myself. (She was at the door looking for him an hour ago and asked me if he'd gone off "to spend the day with his girlfriend". She believes he's seeing someone else.) My son is really a decent guy who wants to do the right thing and be a father to this woman's baby but there's no way he wants to be in a relationship with her. She refuses to accept anything less. I pray for them every day - and for God's protection over us. My son is not a believer. I've already advised my son that it's time to involve the legal system in this situation, perhaps apply for a restraining order, but it's hard for him to talk about it to other people. He's afraid they won't believe him. We live in a small community and she has already spread lies about him making him out to be the bad guy: a cold-hearted irresponsible philanderer. My fear is that someone is going to get hurt before anything is done to stop this obsessive behaviour. Any godly advice for me?”” -

He was defended by The Christian Institute and prosecutors have since dropped the criminal case stating that there was not enough evidence to secure a conviction. "I’ll keep this short. I’m pretty sure I’m not a Christian anymore but I’m not actually sure when it happened. So I’d like to know if there’s a way of knowing whether or not I’m still a Christian. I grew up going to church then as a teenager I became “born again” and “accepted Jesus Christ as my personal Lord and Saviour” and now here I am in my thirties wondering if it’s real. I haven’t been going to church much over the last number of years. I can’t remember the last time I picked up my Bible, and my prayer life – well to be honest it’s never really been existent. So basically I was just thinking about all this the other day and came to the conclusion that I’ve “lost my faith” – I think. But what I’m trying to figure out is how do I know? How do I know if I’m un-saved? I’ve had friends say to me that I’m just going through a “dry patch” – whatever that is – but this dry patch has been over a number of years and has consisted of virtually no spiritual disciplines, no communication with God, and no real conviction of sin in my life. Soooooo – I think I’m done. Right? But should I do something in order to seal the deal? I’m confused…” -
Is there ever a reason to hate someone or should we always only love?
A pastor used the Bible to justify why he hates President Barack Obama and that he's praying for his death. This hatred is due to the fact that President Obama has supported abortion rights. King David said to God in Psalms, “I hate those who hate you; I hate those who rise up against you. I feel only hate for them; they are my enemies." But Jesus said in Luke, “…love your enemies! Do good to those who hate you. Bless those who curse you. Pray for those who hurt you. If someone slaps you on one cheek, offer the other cheek also. If someone demands your coat, offer your shirt also.” Now think about those who have wronged you, raped you, murdered a loved one, abused you. Now what about those that have wronged God? Is there really such a thing as righteous anger? To hate or not to hate. That is the question. -

“My fiancé and I have been engaged for almost five years now and recently, a few of my friends have been encouraging me to break up with him. They think he’s just playing me and stringing me along and that he doesn’t really want to get married. I’m not sure I can break up with him. I mean I know this is getting ridiculous and that five years is long enough to make a decision about an actual wedding date. Sure I’m frustrated with him, and this whole thing, but the bottom line is that I love him. He treats me good. He loves God. This week on the Counsel Of Many: a husband who is experiencing erectile dysfunction wants to know if taking pills to fix the problem is unnatural and possibly unChristian.
“Probably one of the craziest things I’ve ever done – write into a radio show in order to ask for advice about my sexual problems. Anyway, here it goes. I was raised in a very strict religious home. I’ve continued to raise my family with similar values but without the same strict rules that I had. Over the years of raising a family, we’ve had many discussions about what is right and wrong as far as God is concerned. Various questions about vanity and pride have come up like: Should a Christian woman get breast implants? Should a man of God be so concerned about his looks that he decides to spend thousands on a hair transplant? Etc. We’ve also talked about whether or not Christian couples who are having a hard time conceiving should take fertility drugs or just allow God to decide whether or not a natural pregnancy is in the plan. Basically, throughout all of these conversations, the issue of letting go and letting God has been at the forefront of the discussion, and how impatient we are as humans. Well, now it’s my turn. And the issue isn’t hypothetical. Over the last year or so I have noticed that it’s becoming more and more difficult (I was going to say harder and harder but I knew Drew couldn’t handle that one) to maintain an erection during sex with my wife. I guess I’m at that age where this happens, naturally. Typically, I would default to the thinking that if this is a normal part of life, then maybe ask God what can be learned through this season (patience… lots and lots of patience) and wait for things to correct themselves, naturally. However, I’d like your listener’s opinion on whether or not they think that taking Viagra or Cialis or whatever, would be breaking my own rules? Am I just being a hypocrite because I just want to have a better sex life? Do you think that taking medication in order to maintain an erection is unnatural and possibly unchristian?” -
Protesting — Are animals worth it? Sex-ed? Abortion?
This week, the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals made the decision not to euthanize a few hundred animals infected by an aggressive strain of ringworm. Mainly because of the public outcry and angry protests staged outside their Newmarket facility. Would you ever see yourself protesting animal euthanasia? A few weeks ago, the Provincial government changed its mind about implementing a controversial sex-ed curriculum, which bore the protests of the religious right. How about standing outside an abortion clinic or a same-sex wedding? Does protesting really work? More importantly, is this something Christians should engage in? -

As a daughter of a single mom, Melinda Doolittle is quick to give credit to her mother for raising her to not be a quitter! Aren’t adoptions supposed to have happy endings? What about adoptions that don’t work out? What are families to do when despite all efforts, their child isn’t thriving, and the rest of the family is coming apart at the seams? Sadly, isolated families are running out of hope, battling pain, experiencing grief and the loss of a dream. Kristen Richburg sadly had to admit the inability to meet the needs of her adopted daughter and five years later she relinquished her parental rights of a child she had so hoped to love, nurture and cherish for life.

This week on the Counsel Of Many: a mother is having a hard time “letting go and letting God” and disagrees with her husband about encouraging and financing their youngest son’s trip to a dangerous part of the world. “If anything happens to our son, I will divorce him.”
“When my husband and I got married 30 years ago, we knew ‘the family life’ was for us. We envisioned having children, the white picket fence, with Fido the faithful family dog, and God in the middle of it. Happily, we achieved this and more. It’s been a dream. However there is one major disagreement my husband and I have been having over the last few months, and it has gotten to the point where I have even threatened divorce. My husband and I have always believed in initiation rituals and rites of passage for boys and girls into manhood and womanhood. From the beginning of our marriage we set up a fund and contributed to it annually as a way to fund our son’s and daughter’s initiation events when they reached 18. We ended up having three sons, no daughters. Our oldest son used his "Rite of Passage Fund" (ROPF) to fund a four month mission/humanitarian aid trip to Ethiopia. He is now a nurse working for doctors without borders. Our middle child road-tripped around North America with some buddies, camping and trekking in various national parks. He is now a first year seminary student. Our youngest child is the point of contention. Always the daredevil type, he wants to trek across the Darien Gap, a rainforest wilderness area on the borders of Panama and Columbia. What makes this so terrifying is that drug cartels and Columbian paramilitary groups such as the FARC and AUC, perform operations throughout the region. Murders and kidnappings are extremely common, so the Canadian government has issued warnings to avoid all travel in the region. This terrifies me! The risks seem too great; hence I don't want to contribute to my son’s tempting of fate. My husband thinks we should give our son the money and that all men need to risk life and limb, or at least build masculine character through challenge and hardship. Besides, he says "God is not afraid of the Darien, and Christ’s hedge of protection will be with our son even there!" I however, feel that tempting God with stupidity and daredevil stunts offers no promise of a safe return, and it terrifies me. I've told my husband that if we financially contribute, and anything happens to our son, I will divorce him. Of course, if our son goes anyway, on his own dime, the responsibility is all his. Is my husband right? Should I "let go and let God"? Should we finance this trip as we have for our other sons? I'm not sure, but I know how I feel and I am terrified and have nightmares of my son’s funeral and his dead body riddled with bullet holes... Any advice please?”

This week on the Counsel Of Many: a lady confessed to her husband that she had an affair. He then committed suicide. She wants to know if she should tell her sons the reason their father killed himself and if she should commit to staying single to atone for her “sins.”
“I was married to my late husband for about 23 years when he decided to end his life (suicide) three years ago. My husband and I met in a church, and within weeks were madly in love. Within months we were married. The whirlwind romance, which at the time seemed so wonderful and exciting, hid many secrets, mainly my husband's. The man I married had many struggles with mental illness, depression, borderline, bi-polar, schizophrenia. At one time or another he had been diagnosed with them all. Over the years we were married he was a loving and faithful husband and an amazing father. But he was always deeply troubled, and could barely handle the stresses of life. Years of having to carry the weight of two in a marriage that had the husband absent form the home emotionally or through many hospital admissions left me tired, drained, resentful and vulnerable to the affections of another man. As a Christian, I never considered divorce or adultery as a possible outcome. However, when I met another man at the church my husband and I attended, who seemed my husbands polar opposite; confident, healthy, stable, and showed me attention… I just fell for him and started a four year affair with the other man (OM) with all the justifying that typically goes with it. When my conscience finally got the better of me and I could no longer rationalize it, I saw a therapist at our church. In the first session she said that if I wanted to save my marriage and end the affair, I had to expose the affair to everybody I and the OM knew, and then had to cut off all contact with the OM. I immediately told the other man that I could no longer see him, he graciously understood. I then told my husband. I'm not sure how he felt, since he refused to talk to me after that. Several days later, he shot himself, leaving a note that essentially spelled out his reasons; the hurt, betrayal, a wounded self worth wounded even deeper, fears of abandonment, even a sense of rejection by God because of where I met the other man. I guess he felt my affair confirmed what his low self esteem, massive self hatred and his fears of abandonment had been telling him his whole life. That he is unloved, that no one would stay with him for long, and that he would always end up alone and get the short end of the stick when it came to getting the love he deserved. Three years later I have not exposed the affair to anyone else. What would they say about me? What would they think? I've not heard from the OM in three years, and refuse to think about him. I feel guilty, I feel shame, and I feel so alone with the thought that I may have caused my husbands death. My three boys miss their father terribly (they don't know the reason for their father’s death) and are already showing signs of their own struggles with mental illness and depression. Should I tell them? Should I commit to a redemptive singleness for the rest of my life? Can Jesus forgive me for what I have done to my husband and my three boys? I hate myself and wonder if I have any right to even expect relief from the consequences of my own actions? Help... Please.” -

According to information on www.restorestephenbaldwin.org, Stephen Baldwin (Celebrity Apprentice, Celebrity Mole, Celebrity Big Brother) has gone bankrupt because he as turned down roles in movies with sex and gratuitous violence since becoming a Christian. The director of Stephen’s “ministry” has approved this site and their endeavours to restore Stephen’s financial burdens and wants Christians to “reward” Stephen for his moral convictions in the face of Hollywood persecution. According to the site’s founder, “If Stephen stepped down from the public eye; it would be a terrible loss for Christianity.” Will you be donating to this cause? This week on the Counsel Of Many: a Baptist pastor wants to know if he should leave his church/denomination because he disagrees with them about whether gays can be followers of Christ!
I am a Baptist Minister who happens to be affirming of homosexuality. I am convinced that most of my evangelical brothers and sisters just do not get the idea of relational justice when it comes to this issue and rather we continue to be oppressive and act unjustly towards gays and lesbians which is in my opinion completely unacceptable. My Faith Community is not affirming but here I am as a heterosexual Pastor trying to minister with integrity and yet having to hide my status as an affirming Pastor. Should I leave this Church and Baptist Denomination in order to practice ministry within an affirming faith community? When I mention my affirming stance with friends and colleagues the first question is always "Are You Gay?"...The answer is no, just ask my wife, but the question is experienced by me as more than a question and perhaps even a judgment? -
Would you pull your kids out of class if they were taught in Grade 1 about sexual organs; in grade 3 about sexual identity and orientation; and in Grade 6 & 7 about oral and anal intercourse and vaginal lubrication?
The sex education debate is raging again here in Ontario. The new curriculum, which was quietly posted on the Ministry of Education’s website in January, has outraged leaders from the Christian right who have called the curriculum "bordering on criminal" and called on parents to withdraw their children from school May 10 to protest the changes. "It is unconscionable to teach eight-year-old children same-sex marriage, sexual orientation and gender identity," says Charles McVety, president of Canada Christian College. "It is even more absurd to subject sixth graders to ... the pleasures of masturbation, vaginal lubrication and 12-year-olds to lessons on oral intercourse and anal intercourse." -

This week on the Counsel Of Many: a lady who doubts the existence of God & has more liberal views on same sex marriage & abortion than those in her Pentecostal church, wants to know if she’s the only one who feels like she’s half agnostic – half Christian!
“I've been attending the church I go to now for almost a year, but I consider myself an agnostic-Christian. I still take my Bible to church, I still somewhat pray and I still take communion, all because it's how I was raised and I still fundamentally believe that Jesus did die on the cross, but I have so many questions about certain things in the Bible, which is why I see myself as partly an agnostic. I've also become more open-minded and have more liberal views about things like same-sex marriage and abortions and stuff. I've also started doing yoga every now and then, even though I know some Christians condemn it. Because of this, I find it hard to really get involved and meet people at my church. I know a few of the people from the young adults group, and they ask me sometimes why I don't come to the young adult services on Sunday nights. I always make something up like how I have to work after church or something. I disagree with some of the stuff my pastor preaches on, and I feel sometimes like I have to bite my tongue. I have never told anyone at church that I am half agnostic. I'm afraid of what they'll think of me and I'm hesitant about being involved because of this. I don't know of anyone else in the church that can relate to where I am on a spiritual level, and I'm scared to ask about it. I've considered leaving, but I like the church because it's probably one of the only Pentecostal churches that I know of where the people are just simply human and the services aren't boisterous like other Pentecostal churches. Sometimes I feel like I'm alone because of my agnosticism. I feel depressed every time I walk into that place on Sunday mornings. Should I gradually get it out into the open with the few people that I know?” -
Do you think the media is being too hard to the Catholic Church and the Pope?
Over the last few years, a record number of allegations against pedophile priests have come to light. It seems that lately, not a day goes by without the media reporting some new aspect of wrongdoing by either a Catholic leader, the Vatican, or the Pope himself. So do you think the media is blowing things out of proportion? Do you think that there’s a bull’s eye on the back of the Pope’s head? A recent Newsweek article reports that rates of pedophilia by Catholic priests are no different then the rest of the world. Broadcaster and Toronto Sun columnist Michael Coren feels that the world is just picking on his church and his Pope. However, when the Vatican comes out with statements claiming a link between homosexuality and pedophilia, or when the Pope’s personal preacher states that the persecution the Catholic church is going through is similar to the Holocaust… maybe the media has a point… or two… or three. -

This week on the Counsel Of Many: a pastor who has been abused by his wife for years wants to know if he should step down as pastor, divorce his wife, or stay married and just continue to endure it!
“In my 20 plus years as a Pastor of a small congregation in eastern Canada, I’ve had the blessing and privilege of helping many of my congregants walk through personal struggles and tragedies in their life, being an instrument of God’s grace, hope and love in heart breaking circumstances. Among the many situations I have dealt with have been women who have lived in fear of their abusive husbands. I have been married for 14 years, have 3 children, and a deep secret. Abuse happens in my home. From the first year of marriage, my wife has been emotionally and physically abusive towards me. When I met my wife, she had a host of very serious struggles with mental illness. Of course with me being a co-dependent caretaker, this counsellor/patient dynamic fuelled my feelings of love for her. I had no idea that being what I thought was a godly and compassionate man would back fire with 14 years of abuse - 14 years of serial infidelities, emotional and physical abuse. (This includes hitting, hair pulling, spitting, threats of murder and physical harm, wounding comments about my inadequacies as a man and threats to take the children and leave etc.) After years of this, my self image is destroyed and I am horribly depressed. I also feel as if I have no where to turn. I’ve shared this with a co-pastor friend of mine and his response was "It’s the job of the man to be the head of the home. This is a sign that you are not in control of your house, hence you should have no place in the ministry of this church." I've spoken to several men in my men’s bible study group. Their response is either to laugh it off or to tell me "be a man and take it." I am very lonely in this marriage and feel that if I share this with any other member of my church I could lose my job. What am I to do? Do I divorce my wife, who for some reason I love very much? Do I stay and work it out even though past counselling attempts have seen my wife hurl accusations of the most wild and extreme sorts at me? Our marriage counselling sessions have never really gotten anywhere in the past. I'm lost, confused, tired, bitter and hurting. Help!” -

Sexually abused as a teenager, living with an alcoholic mother and a step father who was in and out of prison, then battling an eating disorder, Kim has had her fair share of “demons” in life. Then, at a time when the booze and drugs got the better of her, on her way to meet her dealer, she decided to stop in at the church she’d been driving by. Kim found a new family and a God who found her, in the middle of her mess.

This week on the Counsel Of Many: Sam from Europe took a lot of heat for defending the transgender pastor at his/her church. If your Pastor had a sex change, how would you react?
“My pastor is transgender. The first thing that comes to peoples mind when they hear the situation is Exodus 22: "A woman shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man, neither shall a man put on a woman’s garment." That's not the case here, however. Our highly liked pastor tells that he has born into the wrong body. Seriously. There are people who are born with both genitals and those that are born with the wrong genitals. My pastor has been that way since he was a little kid. He always wanted to dress up as a girl but his parents smothered his "silly" games. He needed to be a real man. When he went to bible college he really tried to be a man. Later in his fifties he realized that he cannot live a lie and basically became a she. She is the most loving, caring and devoted pastor that I've ever met and I've gone through hard times to understand that this is actually okay. In a fallen world everyone doesn't get a good start. I believe that my pastor can really be a light to those who are different and still sincerely want to follow Christ. When he announced his intentions and the fact that our senior pastor isn't going to fire him, 50 people left our church. Lately, I've been having a personal problem. No one outside our church really understands me supporting her. Last month I visibly stood up to defend her in an argument within my family and became judged as a liberal jerk and a big sinner. What should I do? Should I stand up to defend what I believe to be right? Does anyone agree with me or am I alone? (Sorry for my bad English. I'm not a native speaker.)” -

Calls for the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI have become louder as information is being uncovered that he simply transferred a pedophile priest out of his former diocese rather than having him arrested. Dr. Tom Power hails from Ireland where he was educated at Trinity College Dublin. He has taught history at the University of New Brunswick and the University of Toronto. As adjunct professor of church history his teaching interests focus on evangelical spirituality in the 18th century, Celtic Christianity, and Irish church history. He is currently working on a new book provisionally entitled Mines and Ministers: Religious Controversy in an Irish Mining Community which deals with the impact of evangelicals on a copper mining community in mid-19th century Ireland. Andy is Drew’s childhood friend. About 9 years ago Drew asked Andy if he might be interested in talking about Jesus stuff. Andy agreed and soon after made the decision to surrender his life to God and begin following Jesus. Since then, Andy hasn’t really ever gone to church, and yet he seems to still be following Jesus. Can this really be possible?? The fine print in the contract the Church gives you seems to indicate that one will “fall away” and quit the Faith if one doesn’t attend church regularly. One might begin to smoke or drink or swear or recycle!! At least that’s what the Church would have us believe. So with Andy not attending a church regularly, how does he survive spiritually? Have you ever heard of someone following Jesus who’s never attended a church?

This week on the Counsel Of Many: a man wants to know if he should ask his pastor to preach shorter sermons or just leave the church.
“I’ve been attending our church for many years. We’ve had different pastors come and go. Some have preached 20-minutes, some 30-minutes, and some 40 to 50 minutes. The one we have now is in the last group – 40 to 50 minutes! Honestly I’ve have tried… really I have. But I just can NOT sit through 40-50 minutes of ANYONE talking. I don’t care how interesting they or the topic is. And there’s no way I’m bringing my neighbour out to church! Are you kidding me? Everyone I know has a pulse and a life on Sundays. And while they might politely sit through ONE of those services ONCE, there’s no way they’d darken the doors again. So I’d like to know a few things from your listeners. 1/ How long is too long for a sermon? Maybe the long teaching times should be on Wednesday nights when the keeners already go? 2/ Should I confront the pastor about this? He already knows that 40-50 minutes is way too long for a lot of people but I guess for others, it’s cool. So why should he change for me? 3/ Should I just leave, since it’s probably my issue anyway?” -
Should Benny Hinn take a break from ministry now that he’s getting a divorce?
Prosperity Evangelist Benny Hinn announced recently that he and his wife are getting divorced. However, in a statement sent to his followers Benny said, "I want you, as my partner in this ministry, to know that I am going to continue preaching the Gospel and praying for the sick as I have for 36 years. I will not allow anything to slow me down or stop me." Maybe that’s what got him into this mess in the first place. How many people do you know whose families or marriages have suffered at the cost of “ministry”? Wouldn’t it be a good idea for Benny to step down from spiritual leadership, at least for a while? Or should he just keep on keeping on? -

Theresa L. Flores — Author of The Slave Across the Street: The True Story of How an American Teen Survived the World of Human Trafficking
At fifteen years old Theresa L. Flores developed an innocent crush on an older school mate. When he reciprocated her interest, she was overjoyed and naively agreed to take a ride home from school. Instead he took her to his house and raped her. Unknown to Theresa, his cousins had hidden and taken pictures of the rape. She was threatened that the photos would be distributed to her family, church, and friends and she would only get the photos back if she complied with her abuser. Over the span of two years she was transported at late hours of the night from the comfort of her lavish upper middle class home and forced to sleep with thousands of men. Theresa joins us to talk about her journey, the world of human trafficking, and how she pulled her life together. Now a licensed social worker in Ohio, Theresa received a Bachelor of Social Work from Ball State University in Indiana and a Masters in Counseling Education from the University of Dayton as a Human Development Specialist. She's featured by the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center Museum in a traveling exhibit entitled Invisible Slavery. She lectures internationally on human trafficking and currently works for Gracehaven House, a therapeutic, long-term home being built for young girls under the age of eighteen who have been victimized by domestic sexual exploitation.

This week on the Counsel Of Many: a woman wants to know what she should say to her friend who is a wife and mother of two and is falling in love with her best female friend.
“I’ve found myself in the middle of a very complicated and confusing situation. Basically, I have a friend who has “unintentionally” fallen in love with her closest friend. My friend is a Christian, she's married and has two kids and the friend she's fallen in love with is a woman who is also married with a family. Suffice it to say that things are pretty messed up in this family right now. She is an incredible woman who really loves God and she’s never considered herself sexually or romantically attracted to women. So this situation she finds herself in has just blown the doors right off her conservative Christian views. I guess the background on this is that her husband hasn’t really been there for her over the years. He’s a workaholic and totally emotionally detached from her. They’ve just been cohabitating in the same house for quite some time. Over time, she developed a really strong and close friendship with this other woman and recently, well, they crossed the line from friendship into an affair – emotionally and physically. She says she's really confused but that her feelings are so strong that they are just overpowering her and she can't imagine her life without this woman. I’d really like some advice as to what I should say to my friend. I disagree with what she’s doing, but I want to help her. WHAT THE HECK DO I DO?” -
Would you go to a church that allowed women to preach?
“Women in spiritual leadership” is STILL something that many church folks are divided over. Churches like Harvest Bible Chapel state quite clearly that only “men are to serve in the office of Elder and that women are not to serve in church positions in which they exercise authority over men or in which they teach doctrine to men.” They do not see this as an issue of equality because they feel that “men and women do not have the same roles.” Is this a church you would feel comfortable going to, or not? Should women be allowed to teach men in the church? -

Just a few weeks ago, Paul was given some pretty tough news. He has Cancer. With Christmas upon us, chances are that many of us have loved ones who also have that dark cloud of Cancer hanging over their heads. So we thought we'd check in with one of Canada's heroes to find out how he's coping and how this news has affected his faith. We hope that Paul's brutal honesty and spiritual transparency will be an encouragement to you and your loved ones. Since 1972, the man who scored the goal heard from coast to coast has become a Canadian legend. Paul is a member of several sports halls of fame and has had his image depicted on a Canadian Mint coin, the first time a living person other than a sovereign has been depicted on a coin! -

Numerous felonies including assault, weapon & drug charges, landed him 14 years in prison, including a stint at the infamous Folsom Prison. After being paroled eight times, “Eddie” showed up at church one day where the pastor recognized him as a childhood friend. He’s just recently finished his final parole. So what was it that finally turned his life around? God showing up in prison and messing with his heart? The unconditional love of his parents during incarceration? Or a church that loved on him despite his past? His story is just one of the chapters in Craig Gross & Jason Harper’s book, Jesus Loves You This I Know. -

Marina Nemat — Author of Prisoner Of Tehran: A Memoir

In 1982, 16-year-old Marina Nemat was arrested on false charges by Iranian Revolutionary Guards and tortured in Tehran's notorious Evin prison. At a time when most Western teenaged girls are choosing their prom dresses, Nemat was having her feet beaten by men with cables and listening to gunshots as her friends were being executed. She survived only because one of the guards fell in love with her and threatened to harm her family if she refused to marry him. Soon after her forced conversion to Islam and marriage, her husband was assassinated by rival factions. Nemat was returned to prison but, ironically, it was her captor's family who eventually secured her release. An extraordinary tale of faith and survival, Prisoner of Tehran is a testament to the power of love in the face of evil and injustice. -

Jeff was recently fired as the Executive Director from one of the largest camps in the world, a ministry he had been involved with for over 29 years. However, as the director, Jeff has also been on the other side of the coin, having to fire a variety of staff in his position as Director. So, did that aspect of his job description make getting fired any easier? Getting fired can be exceptionally hard on anyone, but especially when it’s with a ministry or charity you’ve poured so much of your life into. Add to that the fact that many ministries and churches also include as part of their compensation package, accommodation. Now when you get fired, you also have to move and possibly uproot your entire family. So should Christians go about firing people any differently than the rest of the world? Would Jesus “fire” anybody? What’s the best way to get someone to move on without crushing their spirit? -

A traitor to atheism or just a sympathetic friend to believers? In An Atheist Defends Religion, Bruce Sheiman argues that the debate about the existence of God is irresolvable. And instead suggests discussing the less-explored issue of the value of religion to society – a debate he believes religion can win. Sheiman, a life-long atheist, says religion has endured through the ages for a simple reason: religion offers substantive benefits – psychological, communal, moral, emotional, existential, and even physical-health – that no other belief system offers. As a non-believer, he offers a unique perspective of the militant “New Atheism,” arguing that it negatively affects the atheist cause far more than it helps.

Heather was diagnosed with Leukemia 11 years ago. Not long ago she contracted pneumonia and was literally at death’s door. Just recently Heather underwent a bone marrow transplant. Raising a family is hard enough but add to that all the emotional and spiritual variables that come with fighting a debilitating illness like Leukemia. One moment one spouse is optimistic and hopeful and the other – not so much. The next moment they find their outlooks reversed. When do you stop praying for healing and just accept the cards that have been dealt? Or do you?

“I’ve been married for a few years now and I’m worried that I’ve made a huge mistake. My husband is an amazing man with an incredible heart. Any woman would be lucky to have him as a husband. The problem, I guess, is with me. I can’t stop thinking about my ex-boyfriend – the guy I was with before I ended up with my husband. I keep wondering what life would be like with him? No one has ever made me feel the way he did. I’ve never had that kind of chemistry with anyone. So now I’m wondering what I should do. Do I end my marriage now before anymore time passes and before we have children or do I stay married and settle for what I have knowing that I will never have what I could have had? I’m trying really hard to do “the right” thing here. I haven’t had any contact with my old boyfriend and don’t plan too. I’ve told a couple of close girlfriends how I feel but have told them to never bring up the topic or his name again. I’m just trying to be open and honest about my feelings. What are some practical steps that a man struggling with pornography can take to break free? Dr. Struthers is associate professor of psychology at Wheaton College where he teaches courses on behavioural neuroscience, men and addictions, and the biological bases of behaviour. His theoretical research is in the area of neuroethics, the biological bases of spirituality and personhood, and the nature of integration in psychology.

Jeremy Taggart — Drummer for Our Lady Peace
When Drew was on CBC’s Test The Nation, he sat beside a pretty nice guy named Jeremy. He found out through the course of the show that Jeremy was in a band and that both he and Drew had gotten on TTN the same way – Strombo made it so! Jeremy said he’d love to come on our show someday. Well, today’s the day! We have no idea what Jeremy believes in, all we know is that Jeremy was on the Believers Team with Drew and that he believes in something! Neither of them go to any youth events at our church let alone the youth group. They are past the age of us “taking them” to church, nor do we want to force it upon them. My husband and I have no idea how to help them grow spiritually and we feel so helpless watching them make poor choices. I know, I know… all we can do is pray for them. C’mon… there’s got to be something we can do other than pray. Are there any parents out there who can give us some practical tips & advice? Do you think it was a wise move for Focus On The Family to spend millions on a 30-second anti abortion Super Bowl ad?
Thirty-second commercials during the Super Bowl are selling for $2.5 million to $2.8 million. According to CBS news, Gary Schneeberger, a spokesman for Focus on the Family, said funds for the ad were donated by a few "very generous friends" and did not come from the ministry’s general fund. So knowing that general funds weren’t used for this bold ad campaign, do you think this was a good use of donations for a Christian ministry? Or should that money have been spent on better things – like Haiti? -

Sass Jordan — Juno Award Winner
Winner of Billboard's Best Female Rock Vocalist award, Sass has toured and/or worked with many music heavyweights, including Aerosmith, Alice Cooper, Cheap Trick, Van Halen, Carlos Santana and Joe Cocker. In 1992, she performed a duet with Joe Cocker for the soundtrack of the motion picture The Bodyguard, starring Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner. Shawn McCraney — Ex-Mormon Turned Born-Again Evangelical Christian
Shawn is the host of Heart of the Matter, a television show that challenges the belief system of Mormons. He’s also the author of I Was A Born-Again Mormon. Growing up in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (LDS), Shawn served a mission in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. He married his wife, Mary, in the Los Angeles Temple. They are both graduates of Brigham Young University. While a member of the LDS Church, Shawn served as a home teacher, elder's quorum president, seminary teacher and a member of a Bishopric and Stake High Council. In 2001, he asked to be excommunicated from the LDS Church.

This week on the Counsel Of Many: a diabetic woman who had a Tubal-Ligation in order to prevent any further dangerous and complicated pregnancies wants to know if she should sue her doctor because the procedure failed within the first year – and man, did she suffer!
“Hi Drew. I do not know if this will fit your criteria for the Counsel of Many. If a Tubal Ligation fails within less than a year should there be some financial help to take care of this baby that was not planned for? I am a diabetic in my 40s that did this surgery for several reasons. I was satisfied with the number of children we already had - various medical reasons - and the very high cost and quality time required to raise children in Canada. I read that this method was 99% effective, and I believed that if it failed it would be at a time when I was no longer able to have children. To my total shock and disbelief, I was with child only 8-months after having this surgery. Unlike the other pregnancies, this time I really, really suffered. I don’t usually take insulin but during this pregnancy I took insulin 472 times (4 months @ 4 times daily). I was in so much pain that I had to stop working. Unlike my other pregnancies, the recovery after this C-Section was long and very painful. I even had to get a transfusion to survive. So, because of the pain and suffering and financial burden ahead of us for many, many years, there are times I really believe that there should be some financial help or compensation. What does the counsel think?” -

Here’s a woman in her thirties who is still single, still a virgin, and still wrestling with whether or not years of doing things the “right way” has panned out. In possibly one of the most honest blogs you’ll ever read, Amy has written about her 40-day ‘spiritual exercise” involving prayer. She continued to bring other’s needs before God but when it came to herself and her life situation – her prayer was simply, “Surprise me, God.” In her blog she writes, “I’m not expecting fireworks and major miracles; but for 40 days I will be chronicling the way that God answers this prayer – if He answers this prayer.” “I’m asking God to show Himself in my life – because I’m willing to serve as the experiment. I’m willing to ask the questions, to go to the wall with God, because, in some twisted way, I think that he DOES care about us… But let’s be honest, for a moment, shall we? If, in any other relationship, the other party was making promises and I didn’t see any “follow through” with them…wouldn’t I value the relationship enough to at least have a discussion about it with them? Or would I just let the disappointment fester to the point where I was completely bitter and resentful towards them?”

This week on the Counsel Of Many: a husband feels stuck in his marriage as well as his job and wants some advice.
“I've been married for 17 years to a woman whom I have zero in common with. Actually, we’ve never had anything in common. I married her for one reason… okay two or three reasons. When we met I was a fairly new Christian and she had been “born again” since the age of five. I was a 28 year old stereotypical long-distance trucker and she was 26. Neither of us had been married, but I had been shacked up many times. She was a virgin and I wanted a woman I could trust while I was on the road for days and weeks at a time. She has been that and more. I wanted a woman I thought would be great with children when we had some. She has been that and more, even though we’ve had a few issues here here. Okay, so here’s my situation: Because of the way things are going with my 10-year old son (youngest), I feel it's time for me to be the man (father) of the house and not him. I want to get off the highway but trucking is all I know and local trucking jobs are very long hours so I don't see the benefit for me being home in that career. Worse then that is the fact that if I come off the highway, I really don't think our marriage will survive. We only have the kids in common and nothing else. We don’t fight because she has no idea how to defend her views. Her views therefore become my views even though I know they’re really not. Counselling will not help. Here's where I gain a lot of hatred from your listeners but I need to be transparent if I hope to get some constructive feedback. Counselling will not help because my wife does not have an original thought in her head. When dating, I often wondered why she was so quiet. It only took a year to understand why. I could go on and on. I’m not perfect by any stretch of the imagination. When I said “Til death do us part,” I meant it. I grew up not knowing my father at all, and I do not want to destroy my children. I cried out to God seeking only his will and He replied, "You picked her." I need to step up and be the man/father I never knew. Please Help.” -

Drew had a conversation this week with Candace about her, as an actor, possibly having to kiss someone other than her husband, NHL sensation Valeri Bure. She gave us permission to talk about it on the show, so what do you think? Should she do this? Obviously nudity and sex scenes are out but what about kissing? However, if she has a “no kissing” clause in her contracts then she won’t be getting much work, if any. So maybe she should re-consider acting as a career? But then again, maybe it has more to do with what kind of kiss – closed or open mouth? Tongue or "Cat's Bum" kiss? Bottom line - are there certain jobs Christians just shouldn’t do, and is acting one of them? Val Thomson
Yvonne Martin was married with three grown boys, 10 grand children, and had battled cancer twice. She was the first Canadian to have been reported killed by the earthquake in Haiti. Val had the honour and privilege to work alongside of Yvonne in the same doctor’s office for the last 29-years. Val has been kind enough to join us this week to give us an update on how Yvonne’s family is doing and to give us a glimpse into the life of this incredibly unselfish woman – a woman who kept going back to Haiti because she was compelled by love.

American televangelist, Pat Robertson, is at it again folks. This time he suggested on his syndicated program, "The 700 Club," that the poverty-stricken country's long history of natural disasters and political turmoil stemmed from a deal with the devil made by the leaders of its 1791 revolution against French rule. "They said, 'We will serve you if you will get us free from the French.' True story. And so the devil said, 'OK, it's a deal,' but ever since, they have been cursed by one thing after the other," said the 79-year-old Christian Coalition founder and onetime Republican presidential candidate. -

A few years ago, Joan had an unsolicited, unexpected and unbelievable encounter with God. Without asking, praying or seeking, she woke up one morning as a churchgoing agnostic and put her head to the pillow that night a highly unlikely Christian. A lifelong skeptic who was militantly anti-Christian, Joan suddenly believed that the Christian story was true. She didn’t even “need” a spiritual experience. Life was perfect. She was a successful PR executive making a healthy six-figure salary, married to her best friend who also made a six-figure salary. They had three healthy, happy kids and lived in their dream home about an hour northwest of New York City. She was seven years sober and had already faced down most of her major issues & resentments. Yet, there she was – sick, crying and convinced that something beyond her comprehension had just happened to her. No one was more surprised than her husband Martin, who was there with her when it happened. “I had fought vigorously over coffee and cigarettes to convince him that religion had been created by leaders to control the masses or by weak individuals to soften the blow of their incapacity to deal with their day to day lives. He never did come around to my way of thinking, but I figured if he could overlook the fact that I was an alcoholic single mother with two kids and marry me, I could overlook the fact that he was a Christian and marry him.”

This week on the Counsel Of Many: a lady wants to know if she should divorce her terminally ill husband and move on, but still take care of him.
“I can’t tell you much because I’m afraid that someone will figure out who I am but I'd really like to hear what your listeners think about my situation. I’ve been married for about 25 years and my husband and I have three grown kids. For the last two years my husband has been incapacitated and bedridden and basically waiting to die. Again, I don’t want to tell you too much about his condition for privacy reasons, but the bottom line is that about six months ago I began to wonder about the possibility of “moving on” romantically and what that might look like. The alternative is that I remain married to him until he eventually dies, which could take years. I know this sounds cold and heartless, but the reality is that I have been, for all intents and purposes, single and alone for pretty much two years already. So here’s the question. Would it be “acceptable” to divorce him in order to at least consider the possibility of remarrying, BUT still carry on taking care of him the way I’ve been? My kids are totally fine with this and tell me they understand. Most of my family, as well as his, have given me the green light as well. However, I just keep wondering what God thinks of this? Would he rather I sacrifice my life – romance, love, affection, intimacy – in order to simply visit the shell of a man that used to be my husband? Or is there any chance He would allow me to love again... now?” -
