Special Guests

  • Gary Chapman
Author of Author of The Five Languages of Apology
Did you know that when it comes to apologizing, people speak different languages? The key to good relationships is learning the apology language of the other person and being willing to speak it. When you speak their primary language, you make it easier for them to genuinely forgive you. When you fail to speak their language, it makes forgiveness more difficult because they are not sure if you are genuinely apologizing! Gary is best known as the author of the New York Times best-selling The Five Love Languages series. He is the director of Marriage and Family Life Consultants, Inc., and travels around the world presenting various seminars. Gary's radio program airs on more than 100 stations.

In September 2001, Tammy and her husband spent a few days in Jamaica - part mission trip, part vacation. On September 10th, Trent went diving and never returned. Tammy spent the rest of the day with rescue divers trying to locate her husband with no success. She woke up the next morning in the home of strangers to discover that the whole world had gone mad. As she waited for news of her husband, she watched the news as two planes ploughed into the Twin Towers in New York - later that day she had to identify the body of her husband. No one in her family could get to her as flights were cancelled. She was held captive in Jamaica for ten more days waiting to return to her family. We had Tammy as our guest in 2005 so we thought we would touch base and see how life has been going for Tammy Trent.

Some people have had to endure more than their fair share of trials! Carla is one of those people. 11 years ago she gave birth to a child with serious medical problems, so severe that many encouraged her to abort. Where is God in all of this?

Prime Minister Stephen Harper says he will respect the vote, adding "we made a promise to have a free vote on this issue, we kept that promise, and obviously the vote was decisive and obviously we'll accept the democratic result of the people's representatives." Harper told reporters "I don't see reopening this question in the future." MPs voted 175-123 against a motion asking whether MPs wanted to see legislation drafted to reinstate the traditional definition of marriage. The House of Commons legalized same-sex marriage in June 2005. Audio not available

  • Eric Sandras — Author of Plastic Jesus
Sadly, if Jesus came in plastic, we just might find Him more to our liking. Suburbia might be a fine place to raise a family, but it's a terrifying and dangerous environment for our spiritual well being. Many of us have exchanged the challenge and vitality of Christ's plan for our lives for the ease of a plastic, soul-numbing, comfort-first mentality. Edgy and honest, Eric Sandras seeks to empower readers to live life as Christ intended: with a radical sense of purpose that only He can provide.

Journey

Talkback, etc.

  • Are some professions off limits if you claim to be a Christian?
WWF Wrestler - Boxer - Ultimate Fighter - Fashion Model - Football or Hockey Player? How about a Lawyer or Politician?

  • Do you agree with the decision of a Christian school to kick one of their students out because her mother was a stripper?
If you had a child enrolled there, would you want them being friends with children who might be living in a home with a questionable lifestyle? I mean, isn't that one of the reasons you pulled little Billy out of the secular school system in the first place?

  • Have Christian trinkets gone too far? How many do you have?
Talking Jesus dolls, WWJD bracelets, sandals that leave the imprint of "Jesus Loves You" in the sand, and those cheesy Christian bumper stickers and t-shirts... how much of this crap do you own? Do you think it really "works"? Will you attempt to "witness" to someone this Christmas in such sly and cunning ways?

Christian couples living together NO, but wife beaters YES? Smokers NO, but drunkards YES? Overeaters NO, but Homosexuals YES? The local sleazy car salesman NO, but the town whore YES? This is a tough one people. LOVE - GRACE - FORGIVENESS - DISCIPLINE... To judge or not to judge, is this the question? Have a read of 1 Corinthians 5 then give us a call!

  • Is the "n-word" really that offensive?
Has politically correct insanity hijacked freedom of speech or are we just more enlightened then the days of Archie Bunker? Every race group has some sort of slang word used to represent them. (Paki, Nigger, Wap, Kraut, Pollack, Jew, Jap, Chink, Spick, and yes... even CRACKER!) So what happened to "sticks and stones may break my bones but names will never hurt me"?

  • Should spanking be outlawed in Canada?
United Nations special envoy, Stephen Lewis, and the president of UNICEF Canada, Nigel Fisher, are both calling on the federal government to rewrite the section of the Criminal Code that allows parents to spank their children. The name and face of Natalee Holloway has been shown in various media reports all over the world. For nearly 19 agonizing months, Beth has mourned her daughter's disappearance and shares with us today, how this horrific tragedy that every parent dreads, has affected her spiritual life.

Talkback, etc.

  • If your child disappeared, do you that think your faith could withstand it?
A little honesty here, people! Imagine it! Think it through! Eventually, could you possibly imagine yourself rejecting the reality of a God who hasn't answered your gut-wrenching cries for help? Maybe He wasn't even there to begin with?

  • Marriage! How have you survived it? Any tips or advice?
A survey to hopefully help all of us! If you've been married for any lasting duration, how the heck have you done it? Please, just give us battlers at least one tip on how to make it last!

    O.C., C.M.M., M.S.C., C.D., LL.D. (Retired)
In 100 days - between April 6 and July 16, 1994 - an estimated 800,000 men, women and children were brutally killed in the African country of Rwanda. The victims - many horrifically hacked to death with machetes - were Tutsi, and moderate Hutus who supported them. General Dallaire was asked by the United Nations to ensure that peace was maintained in Rwanda. But he was criminally unsupported by U.N. headquarters and its Security Council in New York. Dallaire and his handful of soldiers were incapable of stopping the genocide. All he could do was Shake Hands With The Devil! This Remembrance Day, let us not forget the people of Rwanda.

Talkback, etc.

  • Do you feel sorry for Ted Haggard or are you angry about yet another high profile pastor's secret life of sin?
Ted Haggard used to be the president of the National Association of Evangelicals (30 million members) and senior pastor of the 14,000-member New Life Church in Colorado Springs. Last week though, a Denver man claims that Haggard paid him for sex nearly every month for three years and sometimes took methamphetamine during their sexual rendezvous. So now, one of America's 25 most influential evangelicals with the ear of President Bush, has been shamed and fired. Dr. James A. Beverley joined us in this discussion. Jim is the Associate Director of the Institute for the Study of American Religion in Santa Barbara, California and a Professor at Tyndale Seminary in Toronto, Canada. Dr. Beverley's specialities include studies in World and New Religions, Charismatic Christianity, Roman Catholic Theology, and Christian Ethics.

  • The United Church of Canada has spent $10 million to get people back into a church where they are leaving by the droves. Was this a good use of money? Would you be happy if your denomination did this?
The United Church of Canada has launched a new $10.5 million advertising campaign in an attempt to get people back into their church. One of the advertisements shows a wedding cake with two groom figurines and asks the question: "Does anyone object?" Another shows a whipped cream bottle in the fridge along with the question: "How much fun can sex be before it's a sin?" The project is the largest campaign ever for the church and will include advertisements in magazines, community newspapers and on the Internet. A website, www.WonderCafe.ca, has been launched where all of the print advertisements can be viewed and it even has a discussion lounge where the controversial topics can be discussed.

  • Kerri Pomarolli — Our monthly visit from our very own Hollywood Correspondent!

Journey

  • Pastor Peter Rigo
We'll speak with the Pastor of the Dominion Christian Centre in Hamilton, the church featured last week on CTV's "W-5." We'll get Peter's thoughts on the W-5 expose, which claimed that he's a controlling and manipulative leader of a cult who has convinced many of his parishioners to abandon their families for the church.

Talkback, etc.

  • Did you catch CTV's "W-FIVE" expos
Your chance to call in and speak with the pastor of the DCC! What are your thoughts? Is something just not right here or are we over reacting to media hype?

  • Did you have a problem with Drew interviewing a witch last week?
We only received one official complaint from someone who said that their family "actively chose not to listen" to the program. So we thought we'd ask all of you... did we cross the line by interviewing the High Priest of The Wiccan Church of Canada? (By the way, what does it say about Christians, that we received far more complaints when we interviewed Amy Grant?)

  • More calls about the witch interview and closing comments from Dr. James Beverley on Wicca.

Special Guests

  • Kim Paffenroth — Author of Gospel of the Living Dead: George Romero's Visions of Hell on Earth
"Zombies are back," the New York Times declared recently, reporting a new crop of zombie films, books, and computer games. Why the enduring fascination with the undead? It's more than just gore: zombie movies offer insights into human nature, and even into theological concepts such as sin and redemption, says Kim Paffenroth, a scholar known for his studies of Saint Augustine and Flannery O'Connor. He turns his attention to the master of the zombie flick, George A. Romero, in his new book, Gospel of the Living Dead: George Romero's Visions of Hell on Earth.

Journey

  • Richard James — High Priest of The Wiccan Church of Canada
It seems to be more reputable and authentic to consider "primary source material" and actually ask a Wiccan about what Wiccans believe! Richard joins us to clear up any misunderstandings we might have about witchcraft, Wicca, white witches, dark witches... which witch is which!

Talkback, etc.

  • Everything you wanted to know about witchcraft and Wicca but were AFRAID to ask!
A once in a lifetime opportunity to call in with your questions for the High Priest of The Wiccan Church of Canada.

  • What do you do for Halloween? Hide in your back room with the lights off?
Same question every year at this time... what is a Christian supposed to do on Halloween? Do you take your kids trick or treating? Does your church have a "Halloween Alternative"? Do you go to the office Halloween Party or do you stand outside and boycott? Why do you do what you do, or don't do?

  • Do you think that we can communicate with the dead?
Sometimes people have dreams of a deceased loved one... dreams that seem so real and bring such comfort. Are these a blessing from God, a trick of Satan or just our sub-conscious minds taking us to a familiar place? What about when a medium or channeler tells you things that only the deceased would know? How about praying to Mary?

  • Do you visit the grave of your loved one very much or hardly at all?
And on a slightly different matter, if your loved one was killed in the World Trade Center, would you want the remains they just found to be tested to see if there was a match? Or would it really matter to you at all? Just how attached are you to the dead?

Special Guests

  • Spencer Burke — Author of A Heretic's Guide To Eternity
"Christianity needs less religion and more heresy," says this former "Megachurch" pastor, now labeled by many, including himself, as a heretic! "Frankly, I was tired of consuming the resources of the church. I didn't want to just tell people what Jesus said we should do; I wanted to actually go do it with my community." He now lives out his faith with what the Los Angeles Times called "a church with no name"- gathering in a small group wherever the spirit moves them: in his home, garage, at a picnic in the park, or at an art gallery. "People have accused me over the years of not paying enough attention to Scripture, but the truth is, I have these crazy thoughts about love and grace and all the rest precisely because I do read the Bible. And Jesus, as far as I can tell, was the original heretic."

Journey

  • Donny Pauling

Donny's porn career ended on Monday, September 25, 2006... the day he invited God to retake control of his life.

Talkback, etc.

  • Gossip... We all do it! But is there ever a time when it's actually appropriate to gossip?
Is just talking about someone gossip? Only if it's negative? Is it all right to seek advice about a conflict you're in with someone, in order to expedite resolution? Is it okay to talk about someone as long as your motives and attitude are in check and it doesn't become a lifestyle or habit? Maybe this is more about the spirit than the letter of the law! Maybe I just want to gossip and not feel guilty!

  • Legalism... In your opinion, what are some dumb church rules?
We spoke with Pastor Wayne Boadway from Royal City Baptist Church in Guelph, a church known for it's fairly strict and some would say "legalistic" views on Doctrine and Theology.

  • Should Madonna and husband, Guy Ritchie, have been allowed to adopt David, a 13-month-old boy from Malawi?
Human rights groups are challenging the adoption, claiming that Madonna used her fame and her donations of millions to an orphanage in Malawi to speed up the normal legal process. Should they have been allowed to adopt David, even though he has a father in Malawi? Would it have been better for him to remain in Malawi with his birth father?

We'll make a few random phone calls and find out what people in Toronto think about virgins, and then get your opinion.

Talkback, etc.

  • Should ministries borrow money and then expect their supporters to help pay it off?
Does this bother you at all? Shouldn't we be "trusting God" to bring in the money BEFORE we make any big moves? Maybe better fiscal planning and budgetary confines would be a healthier alternative and God just might actually bless this sort of responsibility? Should ministries be in debt?

VISION TV PRESS RELEASE - "Every year, as many as four million North American Christians travel to developing countries on "short-term missions." They visit for a week or two, work with the poor, spread the gospel, and return home feeling the warm glow of Christian fellowship. It's idealistic, admirable and - according to some experts - almost completely useless. In a special two-part documentary report, March 20 and 27 at 10 p.m. ET, the VisionTV current affairs series "360 Vision" looks at the short-term mission phenomenon, and finds out why many people in developing nations wish that missionaries would just stay home. Critics charge that most of the money spent on missions goes to pay for hotels and airfare, and that the poor benefit little from these flying visits."

Special Guests

  • Mr. James Brown — Soul Brother #1! The Hardest Working Man in Show Business! Mr. Dyn-o-mite! The Minister of The New Super-Heavy Funk! The Godfather of Soul!... that's all we need to say!
In a recent interview, Mr. Brown told Canadian radio personality, Drew Marshall, "I have a real story. At 72-years old it's like I've lived five life times! I was born dead. The midwives delivered me and threw me aside for 30-minutes. Then my great aunt, who raised me, picked me up and spanked me. I cried! Someone said I cried, "Please, please!" However, Mr. Brown only recently made the decision to return to the Faith of his youth as he began to take stock of his life. When asked directly by Drew Marshall about his spiritual journey and when it all began, Mr. Brown replied, "It was happening all the time, the same thing with you and everyone. We just fail to recognize it. But I got really into it, I guess, when I got to be about 62." In quite possibly the longest interview ever given by Mr. Brown, he speaks openly about his being "born again." Not only has he been born again spiritually, some might argue that Mr. Brown has been reborn physically... through much plastic surgery. Brown explained, "I've been born again. God made me born-again, born again by the spirit. And then man, through God's forgiveness and mercy on me, made me look like the way I do today. At 72, I look like I did when I was 37. I'm not bragging on me, I just look in amazement. I'm not bragging on me, I'm bragging on God!" Through all the fame and incredible success, Mr. Brown is the first one to give credit to God. And it's not just an "award show - credit to God," but done with genuine humility and a sincere understanding of God's hand on his life."My soul looks back and wonders how I got over. I got over because He carried me over. I didn't walk over myself; it's like 'Footprints In The Sand'. Nobody can fill my shoes because God won't let them." The man born with two Biblical names, James Joseph Brown, said that Psalm 37 is his favourite part of the Bible and that he particularly admired the patience of Job. Mr. Brown thinks that if he were to be one of the Prophets, he would be Moses, because when God finally used him for great things, "...he was a shepherd boy. I was a shoe shine boy!" At the end of this incredibly intimate conversation in which Mr. Marshall asks specific questions about a topic Mr. Brown very rarely talks about -- his spiritual life -- the Godfather of Soul closed with prayer. "Thank God tonight for this meeting. Thank God for this involvement. Thank God for me being able to testify and tell my side to the people who know where I came from. I feel like Will Rogers, Father. I've never seen a person I didn't love. I've seen some people I don't like because they don't follow the ways of You. But thank God for this time. Thank God for what You've done. I love my country, I love my fellow man, I love everybody's country because the world is the place that You sent me Father and wherever I go, it's Your place. You've made me a home everywhere I went. Thank You for this time... In the name of the Lord - Father, Son and the Holy Ghost. Amen."
