Special Guests

  • Jeff Guinn — Author of The Road To Jonestown: Jim Jones & The Peoples Temple
With the same riveting detail and unmatched investigative reporting that made Jeff Guinn’s book on serial killer and cult leader Charles Manson an acclaimed national bestseller, The Road To Jonestown sheds new light on a subject we thought we knew: Jim Jones, the man responsible for the deaths of more than nine hundred people at Jonestown in Guyana. Drawing on a host of new, often exclusive interviews and sources, Guinn delivers the most authoritative and comprehensive account yet of one of the most notorious figures in American history and answers the question, how could this tragedy have happened? Before the public knew him as a monster, Jim Jones had made a name for himself as a young minister in Indianapolis, preaching a curious blend of the gospel and Marxism to a racially integrated congregation. Gaining recognition as a progressive leader in the civil rights movement, Jones created his own church, the Peoples Temple, and moved his followers to northern California, where his gospel drew hundreds of new followers. But Jones was using drugs, engaging in extramarital affairs with women in his congregation, and becoming ever more erratic in his behavior. The image of the Peoples Temple began to darken as Jones’ serious misconduct became public. Increasingly paranoid, Jones decided to move the Peoples Temple to a location far from the eyes of the U.S. government. This was Jonestown, deep in the jungles of Guyana. After being contacted by worried relatives of Peoples Temple congregants, California Congressman Leo Ryan decided to travel to Jonestown to investigate for himself. Guinn’s masterful account of the final days of Jonestown draws on new interviews and documents, as he tells of the assassination of Congressman Ryan and the chilling events surrounding the fatal day in November 1978 when more than nine hundred people—including almost three hundred infants and children - perished after being ordered to swallow a cyanide-laced drink. Communities like Peoples Temple have always captivated the American public, even as they have cast a dark shadow over our history. Skillfully placing Jim Jones in the context of his times, Guinn shows why Jones’ message resonated with his followers, how a charismatic figure like Jones could maintain his congregation despite his misbehavior, and why the tragedy at Jonestown has had such a broad and lasting significance on our culture.

  • Peter Kreeft — Professor of Philosophy at Boston College, Author of Catholics and Protestants: What Can We Learn from Each Other?
The widely read author and philosopher Peter Kreeft presents a unique book that focuses on the important beliefs that Catholics and Protestants share in common. He says this book is inspired by Christ's high priestly prayer in the Gospel of John "that they may be one," and by St. John Paul II's ecumenical encyclical, Ut Unum Sint, which is also based on Christ's prayer for unity. While there are still significant differences, Kreeft says that there has been a radical step of agreement on the single most important issue, justification. Kreeft says the style of the book is that of Pascal, Nietzsche, Solomon, and Jesus: short answers, single points to ponder rather than long strings of argument. It is direct, simple, and confrontational, but vertically rather than horizontally, "directing arrows not against each other (Protestant or Catholic) but against our own hearts and minds and wills." It is timely because, as Pope St. John Paul II said, this next millennium is destined to be the millennium of Christian reunification as the first millennium was that of Christian unity, and the second one of Christian disunity. Above all, Kreeft says that this work is simple, not easy, or obvious, but condensed. It like all of reality is Christocentric. Its purpose is to be "like an Australian sheep dog, herding and hectoring Christ's separated sheep back to His face. For that is the only way they can ever return back to each other."

*Peter Kreeft, Ph.D., Professor of Philosophy at Boston College, is one of the most respected Christian authors of our time. His many bestselling books cover a vast array of topics in spirituality, theology, and philosophy. They include How to Be Holy, Practical Theology, Back to Virtue, Because God Is Real, You Can Understand the Bible, Angels and Demons, Heaven: The Heart's Deepest Longing, and A Summa of the Summa.

  • Andrea Lucado — Author of English Lessons: The Crooked Path of Growing Toward Faith
In this engaging memoir, Andrea speaks to all of us who wrestle with doubt and identity. What she didn’t expect was that God would be much bigger than she’d believed. The church wasn’t just a part of Andrea Lucado’s childhood. It was her childhood. It provided more than happy moments. It provided an invitation to know Jesus. When Andrea arrived in Oxford the year after she graduated from college, she expected to meet God there. “So many nights I felt like the details of my faith were getting fuzzier. Nights turned restless with questions. I questioned God’s existence, and the doubt was getting into my bones.” In English Lessons, Andrea takes us through the roads of England and, more importantly, the paths of the soul. Here she explores the journey of a changing faith and an unchanging God—and why growing up starts with realizing just how small we are.

Sofia Stanidis - Marketing Coordinator for The Rose Theatre, Brampton
    www.rosetheatre.ca TOPICS:

1/ Are people being too hard on convicted serial killer Karla Homolka for volunteering at a Montreal Christian academy where her kids attend? I mean after all - it’s a Christian school where they teach forgiveness. Would you be okay with Karla supervising your kids?

2/ Elizabeth Wettlaufer (former nurse who is being charged with murdering eight seniors and attempting to kill or assault six others) said that she reached out to her pastor for help to try and stop killing. But it wasn’t the pastor that informed the police about her, it was the staff at the psychiatric hospital. Should the pastor be arrested for the role they played in one of Ontario’s worst serial killing sprees or should clergy be allowed to keep confessions a secret? And do you think that there were supernatural forces at work (she said that God or Satan had compelled her to murder) or was it just mental illness?

3/ Toronto Blue Jays Kevin Pillar received a two game suspension for using a “homophobic slur” during a recent game. He also donated $7,000 to two gay rights groups. Do you support the MLB punishment? Should it have been more? Should the “incident” just have been ignored? What words hurt your feelings the most?
