Martin Pistorius — Author Of Ghost Boy: The Miraculous Escape of a Misdiagnosed Boy Trapped Inside His Own Body
WATCH THE INTERVIEW!
Ghost Boy, tells the story of Martin's terrifying misdiagnosis and mysterious return to life. While everyone thought he was in a vegetative state for twelve years, he was fully aware and trapped inside his own body. In January of 1988, at the age of twelve, Martin came home from school complaining of a sore throat. He never went back. An inexplicable illness took over his body, symptom by symptom. First, he lost his voice and stopped eating. Then he slept constantly and shunned those around him. Within a year and a half he was mute and wheelchair-bound. Doctors told Martin’s parents their son had an unknown degenerative disease and he was given two years to live. In a matter of months, Martin had gone from a happy, healthy boy to a hollow shell. He was in a virtual coma, and doctors would never find the cause of his condition. Four years later, at the age of 16, Martin started to regain consciousness. But no one knew. He was still trapped in his broken body, and he completely unable to communicate. “Have you ever seen one of those movies in which someone wakes up as a ghost but they don’t know that they’ve died?” he writes. “That’s how it was, as I realized people were looking through and around me. However much I tried to beg and plead, shout and scream, I couldn’t make them notice me.” For an unimaginable twelve years, Martin was fully conscious while trapped inside his unresponsive body, secretly aware of everything happening around him and utterly powerless to communicate it. He recounts how much he wanted to die in those days, how alone and powerless he felt. Martin’s journey back to communication—back to life—was a slow one. He first gained small amounts of body control, such as the ability to squeeze a hand. Even then, medical professionals declared he only had the intelligence of an infant. It was a special nurse named Virna who was convinced that there was something more going on in Martin’s mind, something very alive below the surface. Ghost Boy is Martin’s story, as written – shockingly and triumphantly – by Martin himself.

Trudy Metzger
Trudy, who grew up Mennonite, suffered severe violence at the hands of her father, and abuse within the the Mennonite community she grew up in. When she finally spoke out, she encountered fierce resistance from those with an agenda to hide abuse, but she was welcomed by many victims. “There wasn’t a day in childhood when I wasn’t fearful. Starting before age ten, I lost all will to live and often wished for death, eventually becoming suicidal. My parents, both Mennonite, also suffered abuse and violence —especially my father—and both passed it on to us. I had to break the cycle; enough was enough.” Trudy is speaking out because there are many still suffering in silence. She wants to let those who are being abused, especially within religious communities, know that they can speak up! Maybe somehow, those who feel trapped could maybe get a hold of her book, Between 2 Gods. Trudy mentors and coaches victims of abuse, and works with churches to tackle this problem. Her organization, Generations Unleashed, helps victims and creates awareness.

TOPICS
1/ Ontario's new sex ed curriculum to be taught to our kids has been released – and so have the protests. The last time it was updated was in the 1900's! (Prince wrote a song about it) Most would agree it was time to be updated, considering the changes in our kids' world since then (whether we like it or not). However, there are those that disagree about the age that certain subjects should be discussed. (masturbation, anal & oral sex, sexting, gender identity & same gender attraction) And some would rather have their kids learn this stuff at home. Bottom line – this is a lose, lose situation for any government. What do you think is at the heart of people's concern? If we teach our kids stuff without moral boundaries, they'll do it? How do we determine what age a child should be before teaching them “X”?
2/ During a legislative debate in the House Of Commons about the new sex ed curriculum this week, Education Minister Liz Sandals punched back at Torie protests by sarcastically suggesting that they might also “want to make the teaching of evolution optional.” Progressive Conservative MPP Rick Nicholls shouted that it's “not a bad idea” to stop teaching evolution in schools. He told reporters later, “For myself, I don’t believe in evolution.” Now people are questioning whether he's fit to be one of our country's leaders. Should someone who doesn't believe in evolution be allowed to hold a position of political leadership?
3/ Pope Francis recently said that spanking is OK as long as it preserves the dignity of the child and is not done in the face. So we thought we'd ask our Dating Game contestants about this “touchy” subject! (Why? Because Drew thinks this is a great first date conversation!)
