Special Guests

  • Karen Armstrong — Leading Religious Scholar, Author of FIELDS OF BLOOD: Religion and the History of Violence
Karen Armstrong is one of the world’s leading authorities on the subject of religion and author of the best-selling works A History of God, Islam, and The Case for God. She has addressed the British House of Parliament, the US Congress, the World Economic Summit, and is an ambassador for the United Nations Alliance for Civilizations. In 2008 she was awarded the TED Prize, and used it to create the Charter for Compassion, a global initiative for peace. In her latest work FIELDS OF BLOOD: Religion and the History of Violence, Armstrong has finally written a work focused on the contentious relationship between religion and the violence that so many people associate with Islam, Judaism, and Christianity. One of the chief arguments levelled against religion is that it is intrinsically violent. Richard Dawkins wrote, “Only the willfully blind could fail to implicate the divisive force of religion in most, if not all, of the violent enmities in the world today”. Armstrong advocates for a more nuanced view. In this sweeping new work she traces human history back to our earliest civilizations and employs an in-depth comparison across all religions. What she uncovers tells us much about how humanity developed and throws out the overly simplified view that religion is violent by nature.

A Radio Host And A Preacher Walk Into A Book...

  • Rob & Kristen Bell — Bestselling Author, International Speaker, Author THE ZIMZUM OF LOVE A New Way of Understanding Marriage
From the New York Times bestselling author of Love Wins and one of Time Magazine’s Hundred Most Influential People (2011), comes a revolutionary way to understand, embrace, and practice marriage. In the U.S., 41% of first marriages end in divorce. That means, according to the CDC, that there is approximately one divorce every 36 seconds. And yet, over 2 million Americans continue to get married every year, and the dating site Match.com has 17 million unique viewers each month. Despite ugly divorce statistics and other obstacles, people yearn for love. According to both Rob and Kristen Bell, “there is an enduring human longing to share our lives with another”, and in THE ZIMZUM OF LOVE: A New Way to Understand Marriage, they team up to examine how this shared life, despite its challenges, can be exciting, gratifying, and joyful. They draw on the ancient Hebrew concept of Zimzum - a word referring to the divine act of contracting, in which God creates space for the world to exist and thrive.
*Rob Bell is host of The Rob Bell Show on OWN. His books include Love Wins, Velvet Elvis, Sex God, Jesus Wants to Save Christians, Drops Like Stars, and What We Talk About When We Talk About God. He was profiled in The New Yorker and TIME magazine, who named him one of 2011’s hundred most influential people. Kristen Bell was trained as an occupational therapist, co-founded the Mars Hill Church in Michigan, and runs the 2Day leadership events.
