    Dr. Russell is currently the Professor of History, Emeritus, at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Besides UCSB, he has taught History and Religious Studies at Berkeley, Riverside, Harvard, New Mexico, and Notre Dame. He has published seventeen books and many articles, most of them in his special field, the history of theology. He is most noted for his five-volume history of the concept of the Devil: The Devil, Satan, Lucifer, Mephistopheles and The Prince of Darkness.

    This week on The Counsel of Many: a lady wants to know if what she saw in her apartment was really her mother, who has been dead for a few years, or not.

    "My mother died of cancer a few years ago and I miss her a lot, but not enough to make me imagine things. Ever since I moved into my apartment weird things have been happening. Most stuff I can write off or rationalize (because I’m a fairly level headed and rational person) but there is one event which still has me baffled. A few months ago I had an incredibly vivid dream about my mother. I mean it was as if she was really alive. Then, a few weeks ago I woke up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom and when I came back into my bedroom, there sitting on the edge of my bed was my mother. I sort of screamed out then froze and my mother just sat there, not looking at me once. I spoke out loud to her but she never reacted to me or talked back. So I decided to move slowly towards her. The closer I got the more faded she became. Then finally, as I was about 3 feet from her, she pretty much just wasn’t there any more. I don’t believe in ghosts. I tend to think that anything appearing as a ghost is simply an evil or demonic spirit pretending to be something familiar so as to deceive us. However, I really don’t see the point of this so called deceptive appearance of my mother. I had been praying to God that I could have just one more conversation with my mom, and now this happened. Was it just my mind tricking me? Was it Satan tricking me? Or was it God answering my prayer. Would He even allow such a thing to happen or would that go against the Bible? I’m so confused and would like to hear other people’s opinions on my experience.”

    • Are you now an atheist? Are you saying you don’t believe in God?
    • What brought all this on? Have you had a marital or financial or moral crisis?
    • How do you want God to show up? What if He doesn’t?
    • Why are you continuing to do a show on Christian radio?

  • Should former colonel Russell Williams be executed?
    Even those who typically oppose the death penalty have wavered on this one. Last week, one of Canada’s top military men was convicted and sentenced to life in prison, which in Canada means 25 years. This, after he subjected Jessica Lloyd (27) and Corporal Marie-France Comeau (37) to hours of beatings, bondage, and repeated sexual assaults, all of which was recorded on video and photographed. Both girls were then killed after pleading for their lives. The list of deviant crimes committed by Williams was so horrific and so long that it took a court clerk 34 minutes to read them into the record. So… can a case ever be made for capitol punishment, and is this it?
