Journey

  • Joan Ball — Atheist, Turned Agnostic, Turned Believer, Turned Beliefnet Blogger!
A few years ago, Joan had an unsolicited, unexpected and unbelievable encounter with God. Without asking, praying or seeking, she woke up one morning as a churchgoing agnostic and put her head to the pillow that night a highly unlikely Christian. A lifelong skeptic who was militantly anti-Christian, Joan suddenly believed that the Christian story was true. She didn’t even “need” a spiritual experience. Life was perfect. She was a successful PR executive making a healthy six-figure salary, married to her best friend who also made a six-figure salary. They had three healthy, happy kids and lived in their dream home about an hour northwest of New York City. She was seven years sober and had already faced down most of her major issues & resentments. Yet, there she was – sick, crying and convinced that something beyond her comprehension had just happened to her. No one was more surprised than her husband Martin, who was there with her when it happened. “I had fought vigorously over coffee and cigarettes to convince him that religion had been created by leaders to control the masses or by weak individuals to soften the blow of their incapacity to deal with their day to day lives. He never did come around to my way of thinking, but I figured if he could overlook the fact that I was an alcoholic single mother with two kids and marry me, I could overlook the fact that he was a Christian and marry him.”

Talkback, etc.

Need Help or Advice On An Issue In Your Life?
Tell us your situation and Drew will ask the listeners of TDMS!

This week on the Counsel Of Many: a lady wants to know if she should divorce her terminally ill husband and move on, but still take care of him.

“I can’t tell you much because I’m afraid that someone will figure out who I am but I'd really like to hear what your listeners think about my situation. I’ve been married for about 25 years and my husband and I have three grown kids. For the last two years my husband has been incapacitated and bedridden and basically waiting to die. Again, I don’t want to tell you too much about his condition for privacy reasons, but the bottom line is that about six months ago I began to wonder about the possibility of “moving on” romantically and what that might look like. The alternative is that I remain married to him until he eventually dies, which could take years. I know this sounds cold and heartless, but the reality is that I have been, for all intents and purposes, single and alone for pretty much two years already. So here’s the question. Would it be “acceptable” to divorce him in order to at least consider the possibility of remarrying, BUT still carry on taking care of him the way I’ve been? My kids are totally fine with this and tell me they understand. Most of my family, as well as his, have given me the green light as well. However, I just keep wondering what God thinks of this? Would he rather I sacrifice my life – romance, love, affection, intimacy – in order to simply visit the shell of a man that used to be my husband? Or is there any chance He would allow me to love again... now?”

  • Should a church hire a sex offender who says he’s been “healed?”
Over 10 years ago, Mark Hourigan was convicted of sexually abusing an 11-year-old boy. Now, he’s been hired by a small church as their worship pastor. He served a five-year sentence in prison and the 41-year-old was placed on the sex offender registry for the rest of his life. Would you want your church to hire him?
